The primary role of a steersperson on the water is the responsibility of crew SAFETY.  This position is key to the success of winning teams and is evident as conditions change around them. Through in-class theory and on-water application, course participants will gain knowledge of:

• Steering strokes
• Minimizing drag on the canoe
• Steering priorities
• Different conditions and tactics used in overtaking a dragon boat
• Seat roles related to maneuvering tactics and turns
• Boat commands and vocabulary
• Effects of wind and water on the canoe
• Right of way
• Buoy turns
• Avoiding collisions

Using these tactics in practice, you will help build both your confidence as a steersperson and the confidence of the team in you.  Please note that the while the intent of this course is to help participants build confidence in the steering position, it is only through practice that real success is achieved.
