A little bit of excitement over the weekend at the Rainier Dragon Boat Festival in Tacoma. A tugboat's wake hit and spilled Portland team Women on Water (soon to be renamed Women in Water, we hear) into the Puget sound. My team was waiting on the dock (about to race) when this all happened.

Thank goodness for the 60' cruiser that happened to be passing by at the time!!! If not for that boat those poor people would STILL be in the water.
Where was the chase boat ???

Ugh, don't even get me started. There was no chase boat. There was a Coast Guard Auxiliary boat near the course that wouldn't have been able to pick up all of the crew in one trip. And it took them about 2 minutes to realize what was going on and get over there.
That water was COLD too. I can't even imagine being stuck in it for as long as those women were.

Note to self, always include a chase boat in a festival.

Watching that all I can think is where is the effing chase boat? Those people were in the water for way longer than they should have been. Rescue should have been mobilized immediately, poor safety planning for sure, especially if organizers didn't immediately notice the situation. =(

Can you imagine doing this in False Creek this week? Couldn't get the boat to huli because the sludge and gunk would hold it up. And if it did huli, imagine getting 20 paddlers cleaned up fast enough to avoid certain death.
