Councillor wants permanent home for Vancouver dragon boaters VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)

A Vancouver city councillor is working to find the dragon boating community a permanent home.

For years, dragon boaters have used a small trailer near the Telus World of Science to store their equipment and a small room at Creekside Community Centre for administration.

NPA Coun. George Affleck says it's time to make a firm plan to change that.

“So many people come to our city to enjoy water and I would like to see us create a facility that tourists and locals can really enjoy, and I think that would be a great investment for developers and for the city."

Affleck says he would like to see a permanent boathouse go up east of the Cambie bridge.

He plans to table a motion to council next week.

Let's all throw our support behind this great idea. I know it's been discussed for years but maybe now it will become real. There is a developer's large sign on the vacant property behind the DZ trailer (Alcan Paddler's Village site) saying a new development is coming soon. Perhaps City Council can extract concessions from the Developer for height or density requirements in exchange for constructing a Paddling Centre?
