The folks over at Great White North (GWN) has a ranking system that they have developed to encompass North American DB Teams. Appropriately named Major League Dragon Boat (MLDB) (I love the name! haha)

Their methodology of creating the MLDB is explained below
(Copy pasted from their site: http://www.gwndragonboat.com/Default.asp?id=129&l=1)

The GWN Crew Rankings are the most comprehensive ranking system in North America. With the goal of incorporating a full compliment of festivals across North America, the system has been designed to take into account such factors as water depth and actual course length.

Festival Inclusion
Festivals are included based on a one-year rolling calendar. For example, once the current years event occurs, the previous years event will be removed. When a festival is included in an event, all races are factored in.

Distance Conversion
Each race course is a different distance. In order to properly compare results from different events, a formula is used to convert all times to 500 meter times. Assuming that a boat reaches full speed by the 50 meter mark and using an average speed for the remainder of the race, conversion of different distances to provide 500 meter times is possible. At GWN events and GWN client events, the distances used are based on GPS readings taken by staff during course installation.

Water Depth
Based on actual water depths, a formula has been developed to adjust final times. This has enabled the System to compare times of both equal distance and depth.

Average Time
Crews are ranked by average time based on calculated times using the above mentioned formulas.

Ranking Updates
Rankings will be updated at minimum on a monthly basis throughout the season. As 2009 will be the first full year using the system, many new events will be added to the system. It is our goal to include over 50 events by the end of the 2009 season.

To me, this is UBER cool, I mean its not the best rating system that can be used (using time averages), but props to putting time in to sorting the data for all 720 teams.

Here's this month's updated MLDB rankings:

p.s: I still prefer DBW's ranking system better (You move up by beating the teams ahead of you)

This is so cool!  Something that I was hoping someone would do.  Thanks so much for taking the time to put this together.

Not sure if it's as accurate as it could be as my team beat 10 of the teams ahead of us in head to head races this year - including beating one of them this past weekend by 4+ seconds in the 500 meter finals and by over 2 seconds in the 200m finals of the Long Beach Tournament.

I'm sure as time progresses, this ranking system will get a bit more accurate.

Kudos for putting it together!  Keep up the great work!

Yes, this is very cool.

Some of us here in the west looked at this system a couple years ago. I talked to the statistician that does it (Tyler Minty aka Power Demon). I figured it works well for closed water but the effect of tidal waters would have to be compensated for and it doesn't do that, not yet anyways.

As you know the west opted for a ladder system based on head-to-head races, which I like. You beat someone higher and you take their spot.

I do like to see all the teams on one ranking though, that's cool.

lol, I'm just posting it up, all the credits goes to whoever at GWN that made it.

Not sure if it's as accurate as it could be as my team beat 10 of the teams ahead of us in head to head races this year - including beating one of them this past weekend by 4+ seconds in the 500 meter finals and by over 2 seconds in the 200m finals of the Long Beach Tournament.

Yea, its not super accurate with its current time average based system, but it will get there in time and with further refinements, even then as Dan mentioned, no amount of refinements can completely compensate for the tidal water issues. So the rankings are to be taken with a grain of salt.

I do like to see all the teams on one ranking though, that's cool.
Indeed, its what makes it so cool...now imagine if DBW ranking had that many teams, that'll will be crazy haha

My bad,

I wasn't keeping up with DBW in August, I was out of town for a bit.

Kudos to you!

Since the topic's been necro-bumped anyway, I'd like to point out that the ranking's on GWN's been updated to 11-11-09 now. Likely the last update of the year.

Too many uncontrolled factors and crude estimation make up these rankings.  If everyone raced at the same place, same conditions and same number of races then the ranking would be more valid as you would have measurable results.  Not to discount it, the ranking are fun to look at though.
