GVRD 44 Cheeks is going to Penticton.
I think Ft. Langley's WOW (Women on Water) is going too.
The race attracts mostly Okanagan teams from Vernon to Oosooyoos, with plenty from Kelowna and Penticton.

Last year I went with Tacoma Destiny Dragons.
After the first round, we had the fastest time, but then...
the wind blew up.  After a considerable delay, the organizers decided to pull the plug for safety concerns.  They then awarded ribbons to the top teams in each of the first round heats.

In Vernon this year (inaugural races) the wind blew up with white caps, yet the organizers kept going despite delays, and one drummer falling in the water, and a team mate jumping in with her.  The wind died down by noon, and the rest of the two day festival was great.

Good luck and have lots of fun in Penticton!

Hey Guys,
Masala is only one of two teams coming from Vancouver - aside from A Breast in A Boat, and of course Agua Gaia who is listed as coming from Abbotsford.  GVRD 44 Cheeks is NOT coming, and neither is the WOW team that was mentioned.  Unfortunately, no Vernon teams are joining us this year, and only a smattering of Kelowna teams (where are you Blazing Paddles, Fire & Isis, Paddlin' on M.T. and Valley Vixens?).

We are also very pleased to be welcoming Capital Iron Dragons to this year's festival!

Where did I read that Penticton has no B/C race?  FALSE!!! We have the Dale Charles Memorial Breast Cancer Survivor race....  an amazing venue on our 'beach bowl' to share in the following ceremony with the participants, get closer than at any other festival!

Rest assured that if your team is not on the list, you will be missing out on a fabulous time, and a beer garden run BY dragon boaters FOR dragonboaters that will be open until 7pm (likely 5 hours after the races are over)!

I'm sure we'll see you all next year!

Wild windy and wet weekend.  Waves going over the gunnels and steers being bounced out of the boat by waves too.  Boats turning at tangents to the course.  Difficult  line ups at the start line.  Quite a Saturday.

But information listed below was incorrect - the GVRD 44 Cheeks were registered in Penticton.  Not only registered but did well.
There were 11 categories and the best three teams raced in the top categoriy, which was also the last race of the day.

Dispite being hindered by one of the boats that lost control and headed north towards the Cheeks boat causing them to have to slow down and take evasive measures to avoid a collision they still came in second and got SILVER medals.

So indeed the Cheeks did go to Penticton.

So... who came first in Penticton?

Wow!  Guess the organizers decided to go with the "not perfect" race conditions.  I know Tacoma really wanted to go for it last year, despited the white caps.  They say they practice in white caps in Puget Sound often.

Good going on GVRD 44 Cheeks to place top 3, 2 years in a row.  Guess they will have to return next year and go for the Gold.

Despite what information might be out there, the conditions at Penticton were not the same as 2004.  They were, indeed, less than perfect, but definitely much more manageable than 2004.   Most crews found that you still needed a very steady hand at the stern (including Capital Iron Dragons, and Masala!).  I can honestly say that I did not see one boat 'disappear' between swells only 50m off shore this year.  Last year was absolutely ridiculous.

The overall winner was Dr'Agonize from Salmon Arm.  Congratulations to all teams who toughed out these really un-Penticton like conditions.  Keep your fingers crossed for next year!

By the way, Sunday AM saw a stiff wind out of the south, Okanagan was calm, but Skaha was a mess - just goes to show that it can come from any direction at any time in the Okanagan!

My apologies to the Cheeks for not having the correct information (minor office typo).  We are indeed glad that they were back for another great festival in Penticton (one where everyone got their 3 races!) and hope to see them come back to challenge for the gold next year!  We are really glad that everyone had a great time, and hope that you will all come back to experience (what may be) some more extreme Okanagan dragon boat paddling!

Congrats to all who went to Penticton!

Coming from a Vancouver Island perspective, what's the problem with white caps??   Waves over the gunnels?  It's a water sport!

As a thought, the GO foundation makes no mention of a Breast Cancer Survivor race on the website for the Penticton festival. This could be why some think this division is non-existent.

See you all in Kelowna.....
