Before all the racing and international competition came to this point (and the heckling on this forum reached this level), the dragon boat festival was about celebrating a very important figure in Chinese history. The festival is supposed to be celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month each year. An interesting read for those who still care:

thanks bro... that's why your mom's gonna keep supplying us with our "good luck" zhong zi, right? Very Happy

what I find great about this sport is that there's so much contemporary tribute too... Breast Cancer definitely comes to mind... and I've met so many people who continue to paddle and race in tribute of their lost loved ones: parents, kids, friends, etc... it's extremely moving...

One team that I keep remembering was an inner-city junior team who entered way back in 1996 (World Championships, Vancouver)... those kids were going through all sorts of abuse, violence, drugs and poverty, but were pulled together to achieve goals and learn team-building skills that they'll hopefully apply to other areas of their lives... they never did come back to any other festivals, but I hope they all did well.

Now it just seems to me that it would make fore sense to celebrate Qu Yuan with Tw festival which is more triditional.  And have Alcan at the end of august, or beginning of september, so the rec team could have more time to train and compete.

Just a thought... Rolling Eyes

let's have Taiwanese Festival and Alcan swap dates... not likely at all, but it would be nice to have more time to prep for Alcan... with constant roster changes and the subsequent "gelling" the team requires, there just doesn't seem to be enough time for Rec teams to show what they're really capable of... just my $0.02 Wink

and before any Comp-level ppl bash me, i want to reiterate: i was talking about Recreational teams   Wink
