Did anyone attend the AGM yesterday?  I was unable to attend and was hoping someone could let us in on what they intend to do for the next year or so...

I heard a rumor that the base membership would be reduced to $215 for a year...

All I could find on the FCRCC website was the following...

The FCRCC AGM was held last night at Emily Carr and although the turn out was light there was lively discussion about both resolutions and the proposed budget. Resolution #1 regarding the ombusdsperson was tabled until the next AGM so that a more complete description can be worked out. Resolution #2 regarding two year terms for the core exec members to maintain continuity was passed. Here is the FCRCC Executive for 2005:

2004 FCRCC Executive
Jeff Kingsley - Commodore
Brad Howie - Vice Commodore
Norm Merkli - Treasurer
Reg Kao - Outrigger Rep
Chris Weltens - Flat Water Rep
Brian Smith - Dragon Boat Rep
Lyna Eng - Secretary
Shane Martin - Communications
Moe Saboune - Equipment

Yeah
they have a new format
$215 being a basic fee
No coaching. Crappy choice of times to paddle and from what I was told, no OC6
Seems steep for just using outdated old Oc1's..........
too bad, I liked the format last year and we had decent coaching as well.
It will be interesting to see who the new coaches are and what they bring to the table.

You must be new Lethal.

I guess you never paddled or began your paddling career on the old montgomery's rudderless as well.... before the (I'm broken weekly) Surfriggers did you?
Nor were you around paying $ 310.00 per year before a coach and the (I'm broken weekly)Surfriggers came along were you?

ha ha ha I welcome the new format dearly.  Should have happened LONG ago.

Looks like I'm going back to FCRCC.

Ahhhhh....the good old days.

Lethal Weapon knows little about what is available at FCRCC.  Has no idea how it is going to work and is probably one of the many who were not at the AGM (if they are in fact a member of FCRCC).

My opinion is that the new structure is great.

Here is an example just to show what is possible; for those dragonboat teams that have all their paddlers who want to join FCRCC as full members they can get a DB twice a week for no additional charge.  So you get use of all the other boats and a DB for cheap.  If you don't have a full team that wants to join then consider that for every member that joins FCRCC as a member the dragonboat team is eligible to receive a rebate of $95, no double taxation at FCRCC just in real government.

If you want to be competitive then you need to get out of the dragonboat. This is the best deal in the lower mainland.

By the way many programs will not have paid coaching but volunteer coaching and you can join those programs (such as OC6 etc).

Welcome back Guido, we think  Laughing

Sorry to disapoint my friends , but
A:  i have been a member for 2 years already
B: i as at the AGM (not a very big turnout either!)

I am Ok with the $210 Base fee (despite the somewhat limited amount of Surfriggers (and Yes I did my time in the Mongomeries thank you..)
My concerns are who will be coaching and what programs will be available.
I have also "gotten out of the Dragonboat" and "do know what is going on"at the creek as well. (probably actively volunteered more times that some people I can mention)
Once again, Biggest dislike is the uncertainty of coachs and their qualificiations.

Opions are like a$$holes, Everyone has one

Actually the turnout was not bad, I remember the days when 20 people showed up and that was not that long ago.

LW did you fall asleep since the fees are $215 not $210.   Also your comment about limited boats is totally off for a full member, you can use any OC1 you want in non program times.

Remember the exec said the coaches are dictated by the programs and there was a question on what a program is, currently things like OC Distance, Sprint, Men and Women DB, and flatwater were mentioned.  They also said that the exec with advice from the new program coordinator has the final say on what is a program.

So if you are not in a program you will get no say cause you get no coaching.  If you join a program and you let a few decide what is best for you (re coaching) you get what you deserve.  If you want coaching be part of the process.

Shocked , it sounds like we have to take responsibility for ourselves now.

Only 2 years, still in diapers then for knowing the goings on  Wink

In the end it will be interesting to see what the programs do and choose for coaches that I agree with.

Very Happy
ooops
Must have been the chocolate muffin OD during the meeting
True you can take OC1s on off program hours but that doesn't leave many desirable times to paddle, especially if you want go with a friend or 2.
Coaching i agree will be an issue and I do not like the idea of a few paddlers dictating what I would like to get out of a program.
After 2 years I may be in diapers but still wise enough to know I want and need to grow as a paddler. Say what they want about Alan but despite his misgivings he was a damn good coach.
I too look forward to see who they will offer for coaches.
Do you, only wiser member, have any sugestions for coaches?

Who don't you want is what I will ask of you  8)

I will agree Alan was a good technical coach, I don't think FCRCC disagrees with that, it came down to how many people can get coached by one person from what I heard.  Too many people looking for coaching and not enough hours and money to do it with one person.

I am pretty flexible in coaches since I always learn something from each of them.  For me, I want a coach that coaches everyone and gets me motivated.  Being yelled at like a 5 year old is not motivation for me.  Assisting me and my fellow team with various goals would be great, no goal no work from me  Smile

Yes
I feel Calvin would be a good coach as he has given me a few usefull tips in the past and looks like he has a lot to share.
As for other coaches I have not had anyone else offer any other advice or direction other than my inital novice year and last years RD with Alan.
U know of any other candidates? (heard Dave & lori V were kick ass as well but I am not on the women's team!)

Thanks to moturismo for bringing this to my attention...
I know it's a month late but FCRCC has finally put up their minutes from the AGM. Here's the excerpt from the minutes relating to dragon boat...

Quote
DB report:
*** Thanks to Lela for handling all the administrative work for the dragon boat members. Thank you to the team managers that kept their contact info current and followed up with requested information. Let’s keep this up for the new season!

1. New Dragon Boat Fees: number of teams remained relatively the same. Saw a reduction in revenue. Teams were able to pay for the services they utilized without having to pay for ones they did not use.
Accounting for the drop in revenue: there are new teams to FCRCC and hopefully they have found themselves a new home. There were some teams that no longer exist and a trend that started a few years ago seems to have picked up speed – lots of teams have merged to become more competitive.

2. New lights and batteries policy: FCRCC got new lights for the dragon boats and teams were responsible for bringing their own batteries – worked out VERY WELL so this will be status quo.

3. New Dragon Boats – Geminis: Purchased these boats to bring FCRCC to IDBF standards. These are the types of boats they are racing internationally. Feedback has been mixed.
Thanks to Brad for setting up the practice schedule so everyone had an equal chance with both types of boats.
Pros:
- Boats are lighter and easier to transport from dry to wet and vice versa
- Boats are shorter which makes them easier to store over the winter
- Teams like racing in them cause they are lighter
- “How To…” list from Brad
Cons:
- Smaller, people are cramped during practice.
- Tippier
- Lack adequate foot bracing
- Underside of the seats is sharp and has caused injury. *FCRCC will look into modifying the seats to prevent injury

4. FCRCC Spring Regatta 2004: Mother’s Day… successful event - we had 32 teams. BIG thanks to Dragon Zone for the use of their facilities, Leah and Simona from Alcan DBF for the crew marshalling. Last but not least, you may have seen our website; there was a HUGE list of volunteers that made this event possible and successful (FCRCC News May 12th). To name a few; Greg Lam (Barry’s brother) and Moe for setting up the race course on Saturday, Brad Howie and Tony Pawlett for helping with the equipment, and Greg Lamb from Alcan DBF for his guidance.
Regatta raised $3900, which went back to the general FCRCC pool.

5. FCRCC DB Team Racing Results 2004: very successful racing for all of our teams.
Results will be posted on www.fcrcc.com website
Highlights:
Alcan 2004: saw Canada take the Festival back from the US. FCRCC has 100% participation from our dragon boat teams. 75% of our members made it past the semis and into the finals.
International racing: Dragon Ladies went to Portland in June and finished 8th overall in the Women’s division. Pacific Reach went to Montreal and finished 5th overall in the Premier Mixed division. Alpha Dragons and the FCRCC Grandragons went to Kent and finished in the top half of the field. Roli Dragons went to New York and placed 2nd in their mixed division final. Team United went to Long Beach, California and finished 3rd in their mixed division final.
Upcoming races: Kelowna (Sept 18-19), San Francisco (Sept 25-26)
Montreal – National race off: FCRCC is sending 4 teams – 2 women’s teams: Open and Masters, 1 men’s team: Open and 1 mixed team. They are racing for the right to represent Canada in the World Championships in Germany 2005.  Let’s give them a hand and wish them well!

6. Looking to DB Season 2005
Registration:
- Dragon boat member fees will stay the same for 2004/2005. Juniors and Seniors will have their discount.
- Grandfather clause: implemented 2003 and will continue. Teams that want to keep their practice slots will need to provide a signed dragon boat practice contract and a cheques for 50% of practice fees at the first registration.
- Steering accreditation: DB Teams need to confirm their steerspeople at registration and determine whether they need to be retested.  Information as to who to contact and process will be provided at time of sign up
- FCRCC Spring Regatta 2005: teams to complete registration form and pay 50% of entry fee. Have until 2 weeks prior to the regatta to withdraw. There will be a monetary penalty if teams withdraw after the 2-week deadline. Regatta is very popular and there are teams on a waiting list.
FCRCC Spring Regatta 2005:
- New race at the end of regatta: Mother of all Races – 3 kms top 8 teams to compete. Top prize is free entry into 2006 Regatta.
- Establish Athlete’s fund – money raised from regatta will go towards offsetting expenses for the FCRCC Women’s and Men’s dragon boat teams for international travel.
FCRCC Sprint Series 2005 (inaugural):
- Series of races: once a month on a Sunday afternoon – approx. 22-24 teams. 2 teams racing at a time knock out to accumulate points. 250/500-meter course. Begins in March and runs to September with a final race to crown the top winner. Final race will be invitation only for teams that have accumulated the most points throughout the series to crown the winner. Cash prize value tbd.

The last bit regarding the Sprint Series caused a "choke on coffee" moment in the office for me since we've had some discussion on this before on and off the DragonBoatWest... and it sounds strangely similar to Toronto's Summer Sizzler. If the stuff they're proposing if for real and with the 2006 Club Crew qualifiers in Calgary... we've got an interesting 2005 season to look forward to. Anyone know more about this?
