There has been some talk about having tests to determine the "competitive" paddlers from "recreational" paddlers over the years and just wondering what some teams are doing in terms of tests...

Ron, correct me if I'm wrong but I think DWW is doing a lot of tests in the gym such as on the benchpress (how many reps can you bench for two minutes. Girls bench 45lbs, while guys bench 65lbs) as well as times runs.

For Roli, they're doing two marathon canoe time trials and three ERG tests (your time for a difficulty setting of 5 and distance at 500m) over the course of the season.  Does anyone know what a good time for the ERG at those settings would be?  Just want to have sometime to compare my times to...

Erg:
Guys - times are around 2:15 - 3:00
Girls - don't quote me, but somewhere between 2:50-3:30

There are ways to cheat the Erg unfortunately (which i won't share, b/c I don't do), and those who have really bulky, heavy frames can use their weight to their advantage.

But that same weight is a disadvantage in the boat, since you've got to move your own weight.  On an Erg, all you have to do is keep a flywheel spinning.

The benchpress seems to be a strange way to test fitness.

DWW is doing fitness tests and time trials for paddlers going for the "comp" team.

The fitness tests comprise of bench press, bench pulls, chin ups for men and lat pull downs for women.  I think we are supposed to do as many completed reps as possible in two minutes.  There is also a 1.6 km run.

The run is a good indicator of fitness.  The bench presses, pulls, etc. are probably good indicators of our strength.

I agree that weight is an issue.  I am a bit surprised that we haven't been asked about our weight and body fat ratio.

Shocked

I don't think any man on this planet could ask that from a dozen women and survive to tell about it.

What are the weights for the tests?  Call me a wimp but... I can't picture anyone doing reps for a full two minutes.  I'm thinking people's muscles would fail before the two minutes is up.  Then again, it would depend on the weights used.

There is a difference in tests for strength and endurance.... For strength it would be more useful to do a 1 rep max rather than #rep/2min... #rep/2min is more of an endurance test.

As long as the tests are used amongst the team, it shouldn't make too much of a difference since they're being scored relative to each other... but I think it could be more thought out...

You are a wimp.  Guys only have to bench press 65 lbs and 45 lbs for women.  For the bench pulls, 45 lbs for men and 35 lbs for women. I don't know what the weight is for lat pulls.

I don't think we are expected to do continuous reps for two minutes, just as many as we can.

Well, if the women are insecure about their weight, they probably could afford to lose a few pounds.  I don't mean they have to tell the whole team, just so the coach knows.  Won't this information be helpful when you try to balance the boat!?!

I would like to know some women's weights and body-fat ratio.   How about it?  (Nook, you saw this one coming)

Chris: you are automatically disqualified from any strength training test, and muscle ratio.   Razz

I don't know if we have strong girls or not, that's just the set weight.  Since we haven't actually had a fitness test yet, who knows if the women can handle the weight.

We will have our first test in March and a second one in April.  I don't think our coach will share our results with the rest of the team, so I think I can only tell you about the top female - me. Wink

Well, aren't you a feisty one...  Basically that's what I meant when I said, "I'm thinking people's muscles would fail before the two minutes is up." By the way you described it, it sounded like you were times for the full two minutes and if you didn't make it to two minutes, you'd get a DNF.

Max number of reps without a time frame sounds a bit more reasonable.

While you're at it... why don't you throw in a bridge test as well to determine everyone's relative core strength? I'm pretty sure moturismo is more than willing to desribe it to you since he's making VO2Max do it... Very Happy

I was thinking of implementing a dexterity of the thumbs test.

Basically get the whole team together around an xbox, fire up counterstrike, and last man/woman standing wins.   Whistle

Max number of reps without a time frame?  That's kind of boring.  I want to see people sweat it out for at least two minutes, especially the guys.

Mo, what's the bridge test?
