Title: Day of the Longboat 2003 Post by: beedub on October 06, 2003, 07:04:44 PM The Day of the Longboat at Jericho beach was ran last weekend.
For those not familiar with this event, it's part of the UBC intramural games, but they also have divisions for community teams. It consists of a 2km obstacle course in a 10 person canoe. The Fresh "kids" (as some of you call us) and some friends/family of the team fielded two teams to the longboat event; team Wet Noodle (I'll let you guess who steered for that team and why they're called that.. :P ) and team "Oh Please God, Not Last!" (OPGNL). Both team managed to make the final heat and raced together. Team OPGNL used a 6/16 start to pull ahead from the start, avoiding collisions into the first turn and holding their lead throughout the long 2km course to finish first in the community corec division with a time of 8:47. Team Wet Noodle came in a respected 4th with a time of 9:59. The fastest time of the day was a 8:07 by the false creek (FCRCC?) team in the competitive division. Congratulations to all racers...it was a fun race that adds a bit of variety to the straight line racing of dragon boats. A capsizing was witnessed...but it was within a few meters of shore. Title: Day of the Longboat 2003 Post by: Photog on October 06, 2003, 07:22:45 PM Got pics?

Title: Day of the Longboat 2003 Post by: Nook on October 07, 2003, 12:32:47 AM The races begin with a running start: 8-9 boats are lined up side by side on the shore. One paddler (usually the steers) stays behind on the sand about 5-10 meters up.
When the race official blows the horn, you sprint down to the boat, hop in and off you go. I did the beginning sprints for one of the boats. So while sprinting, about halfway between the 'start line' and the actual boat, the guy to my immediate left begins yelling, "go! go! go!" and waving his arms frantically. Thought to myself, that's sounds a bit early. Whatever, just get on with the race. So after the race, we found out that a certain team took off without their steersman. He had to swim out to catch up to them! LOL to paraphrase the Simpson's Comic Book Guy: "Funniest. Moment. Ever." As soon as I hear someone yell "go go go" (whether they were on our team or not...I wasn't sure)...I started paddling...but I swear, in both races, I never felt our runner (steersperson) jump into the boat. I just paddled on and hope I wouldn't hear him calling us back to pick him up!!... :P |
