Title: DID EVERYONE ENJOY THE TAIWANESE BOATS???! Post by: BelligerentTuna on September 03, 2003, 10:33:38 PM lol
on several ocassions, i nearly fell off the boat *sigh* someone please tell me they're going to video tape all the races. i get the feeling there are going to be a whole lot of collisions and donuts happening. and hey, if by chance we do collide or 360 in the waters, at least we can enjoy laughing at ourselves. :0) t. Title: DID EVERYONE ENJOY THE TAIWANESE BOATS???! Post by: BelligerentTuna on September 04, 2003, 12:50:27 AM The seats arent high... the edges are just super low. if the boat turns too fast (as it did tonite), the boat can flip over. if there are big wakes from boats, water is going to get in. haha.
the teak boats are cool. i'd love to have a chance to practice with teak boats :0) but the taiwanese boats are dangerously suicidal. there are a number of teams that havent been on them before and they're GOING lose control. the taiwanese boats are much wider (more resistance), heavier (MORE resistance), the ores are teak-boat ores... which are thin and short (which resists turning),,, and --to top it off-- the ore has a lessened range of motion (which resists turning). i dont have a schedule, but i'm guessing that 3X more boats are going to crash this coming saturday compared to alcan. FUN!~ (so long as nobody gets seriously hurt) t. Title: DID EVERYONE ENJOY THE TAIWANESE BOATS???! LOL  That's disgusting! How can you wish that upon anybody? Though upon second thought . . . I might wish it upon those talented kids from Pemberton. Title: DID EVERYONE ENJOY THE TAIWANESE BOATS???! Post by: BelligerentTuna on September 04, 2003, 08:18:44 AM yah so long as nobody gets hurt, i think it's cool. my ass is black because i slipped and fell into the boat. fun!
after all, it's a reminder that the steerperson is a valuable team member. haha. unfortunately, steerppl never really get remembered in that sense. hahaa. do a good job and nobody remembers. mess up and the steerperson gets blamed. muahaa... funny!~ Title: DID EVERYONE ENJOY THE TAIWANESE BOATS???! Post by: Nook on September 04, 2003, 10:45:28 AM I happen to value the steers (& drummer) positions quite a lot, for the simple reason that the real good ones are great team leaders.

Quote The dragon boat race (for which I know you take interest in) will be something special because the boats were gifts to Canada from a master dragon boat builder in Taiwan. Mayor Campbell officially received them last month at False Creek by finish painting the pupils. Pretty cool that Taiwanese Racing style will be in Vancouver. Also good to have 2 festivals in Vancouver. Title: DID EVERYONE ENJOY THE TAIWANESE BOATS???! Or specifically it has to be smaller person? :D yeah, damnit i wanted to be the flag catcher... but noooo... they gave the flag-catching rights to a girl on our team that's under 95 pounds. -____- Title: DID EVERYONE ENJOY THE TAIWANESE BOATS???! Oh quit your whining, you'll be paddling next year ;) From a paddler's perspective, the flagcatching boats are wider, the space between the seats longer making it harder to brace and the seats are really high. There's probably less than an inch of space between the top of the seat and the top of the gunnel. The guy behind me kept hitting me in the ass with his paddle....oh wait a sec, that was *after* practice. You also move your hand up the paddle b/c you're so much higher up. Apparently there will be special paddles for these boats, we're not allowed to use the regular paddles. The teak boats are the opposite of the flagcatching boats, they're thin, narrow and the seats are buried down in the boat. They sink a lot more than the flagcatchers though so your paddle is right in the water. For this one you move your hand down. A lot more water definitely gets into the boat. Title: DID EVERYONE ENJOY THE TAIWANESE BOATS???! Post by: BelligerentTuna on September 08, 2003, 12:01:31 AM The taiwanese boats are evil. i NEVER want to sit in them again. the trick to steering them is to have the team stop paddling while making any kind of turns. gotta have the boat coast on neutral.
