Dragon Boat West

Please help spread the word for a good cause. This is for LARD's founder Leon and his precious baby, Avy Cheng. Avy is diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Docs say she had an in-utero stroke. Our local dragon boat community is pulling for her and you can help, too!

I Dream to Dance with My Daughter

 I dream of dancing with my daughter. Whether it be at her wedding (which is a more concrete and reoccuring dream) or any occasion that celebrates the general thought.
You see, my beautiful girl, now one, came into this world full of challenges. Doctor's say she had an in-utero stroke. She is hearing and vision impaired, and diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Some things have changed - what we thought it would be like to be parents, the journey of raising a child. But the dreams haven't. For my wife and I, she is our first, and she is everything we ever wanted.
For now, I carry her. And we dance to music, practicing for our big moment in the future.

Dear Friends, Family and Extended Family,

Your generous support is heartening and overwhelming. I wanted to share with all of you a couple of notes and comments I had written to some of you; after all, it’s probably the most appropriate here. I originally wrote the note, the dream, not with any intention to win a contest. Wynne and I truly believe in the power of a wish, of prayer, of dreams, an...d of hope. We know that the support and well-wishes we’ve received up to this point have impacted remarkable improvements for our baby girl. When I received the mass mail from Upromise to “share my dream”, I thought it was an opportunity to get a positive thought ‘out there’ on behalf of Avy. And it was a personal dream that, up until writing it, I had kept to myself; I was excited to show Wynne. After all, each night, Avy seem to find comfort in gently swaying to music with me, and I would find time in my own thoughts about her future.

The Dragon Boat Community is alive and strong. When I posted this topic this afternoon. The Baby Avy count was around 3600...this evening, we are now at 4004 count.

I'm so astonished by the love and support we have for each other.

I know on the start line, we want to kick each other's butt...but when off the water, we are one big family, regardless of team, city and/or country.

As of Sunday August 7th 2:30am, Baby Avy has 4720 votes. Don't stop, every vote will make a difference for Baby Avy.

Ok. Kiley is starting to make an aggressive move on Baby Avy. Kiley started slow but has been able to overtake Garrett very easily for second most votes. So, if you haven't voted for Baby Avy, please do.

There is $10k on the line. Our dragon boat community is big enough and if we keep pitching in with votes , Baby Avy and family will have xtra finances to get the best care possible.

now, don't get me wrong here...little Kiley is very adorable and probably deserves the money too...

However, I'm here to support our Dragon Boat Family and Baby Avy

About a week ago, Baby Avy was in a clear lead with an extra 2,000 votes...it look like she was in the clear lead. Now Little Kiley has closed the gap and is only 868 votes off..

So, if we all voted each day and kept the margin in around 1500 votes...Baby Avy and Family will be ever thankful.

Time to take it up to the next level, I suggest posting it on facebook profiles to access that social network as well.  If everyone's got a couple hundred friends on facebook (I've probably got close to 800), and just a portion vote for your story, then that should blow everyone out of the water. 

I will do so when I get home from work :D

I'm taking a look at the website and I see some peculiarities.
1.  If you go to this link http://www.upromisetodream.com/ind-stories.html?storyID=8743 (http://www.upromisetodream.com/ind-stories.html?storyID=8743)
you will see the number of votes for this particular dream.
However, if you go to the main site http://www.upromisetodream.com (http://www.upromisetodream.com) and then click on View all dreams, then sort by most popular, you will see the dream in second place, but it has a different vote count.

2.  If I vote on the dream, the vote counter increments.  If I close the browser and go back to the page, the original count is there, as if I didn't vote in the first place.  I've tried this on a different browser and even on my smart phone.  Same deal.

it was great to see all the Baby Avy support this weekend in San Fran! Thank you to everyone who wore the stickers or passed out info. Big Thanks to Hans (esp for wearing the stickers on his head) and Puppy who helped spread the word to all the teams.
There's been a surge in votes over the weekend, but there are A FEW DAYS LEFT so keep clicking! She still needs more votes! Remember you can only click once every 24 hours so go to as many computers/cellphones as you can to vote and tell others to do the same  :P

To all of you, Dragonboatwest and the Canadian paddling community,

A heartfelt thanks to you on your tremendous and overwhelming support for my daughter Avy and our family.  The culmination of your efforts are being archived;  I am printing as much of the digital content as I can find to document this event so I can assemble in a binder/scrapbook, and share with Avy as she gets older.  I will tell her a story of the time that people from all over donated their generous spirit for her...

The contest has since ended, and we have not yet received the "official" results, but irregardless, we are so completely blessed to receive your thoughts and well-wishes.  A special thanks to Puppy and Hans for bringing so much attention and investing so much heart in championing this effort; despite the brief time afforded us to catch up at each race venue over the years, your friendship means much more.

Oh, and a hearty congratulations, AGAIN, to the Canadian teams One West and Jet Start for their well-earned placing at the Treasure Island Festival.  We have thoroughly enjoyed the competition over the years, and LARD will certainly strive to work to make it competitive in future years.  As much as we enjoy "Oh Canada",... :)
