Title: [Sept 25-26, 2010] San Francisco International DB Festival
Post by: NFW on September 01, 2010, 11:20:18 PM
Was just checking up the team bios and saw that there's alot of canadian teams attending this year...

12 teams on my count:
- Masters
- Concord Pacific
- Deep Cove Red Tied
- Magnum
- Jetstart
- FLCC Mixed
- Fluid Motion
- Sisters In Sync
- Pond Scum
- SIB
- LifeScan
- TD Lightning

There's probably more teams attending that I dont know of.
If I recall correctly, I believe there's a good east team coming, but I cant remember the team name..

It's going to be awesome festival with such a huge canadian representation!

Any talk of teams joining forces for women's, men's, masters races? I'll be down there with Pond Scum and would be very interested in gettting in some extra racing as part of a men's or masters squad.

I'll be down there and wouldn't mind hopping into a women's boat if one is being organized. What's the age for a master's boat?  I'd be in for that if I'm old enough.

Magnum will be joining forces with Masters for the mens and womens, and I believe they might have enough for their own master's category lol

I've heard talks a while back of Jetstart teaming up with another team but cant remember which team.

Sigh...6 months too young for Masters...still looking for a women's boat though.  I thought I heard Jet Start was teaming up with SI.

There is only one other Canadian team that I can see Deep Cove Catch 22 (women).

Looks like the Canadian teams will have their hands full with the Americans, can we sweep all the golds/silvers/bronzes this year? Predictions anyone?

Hi fellow paddlers,

My team will be going to the SF dragon boat race and we're interested in pairing up with another Canadian team for the gender races. (not sure about the Masters race, but it's open for discussion)
We're a Rec A/B team that practices out of False Creek twice a week, and we've been a fixture on the Vancouver dragon boat scene for a good number of seasons. We're high spirited and fun!

If your team is interested in joining with us for the women's and men's races in SF, please send me a pm and I'll respond.

Paddles up!

It'll be quite a long shot. I'm pretty sure that the American teams took notice of the huge Canadian contingent and bracing themselves for battle. No specific prediction but the finals are going to be nothing short of wars. :D

Everyone bring your Cda flags and let's see how much red and white we can show in the paddler's village.  A Canadian domination would be awesome.

Good Afternoon All,

Tide & Paddled is headed to San Fracisco. We're racing mixed division, but if we can pick up 5 women, we'll be able to race i the womens' cup too.

Drop me a line if you're interested in teaming up with us for these heats.

Thanks,
Sandy

I don't know where the Canadian curse originated from but...I believe Canadian teams won 3 of the 5 years the race was held at TI.  2005 was DW and 2009 was LARD but there was a Canadian 3-peat in between.

I think it came from the fact that no Canadian team won until 2006 and the festival has been around since the mid 90's(?), therefore the "Canadian curse" of not winning.

Teams are dropping out? That's too bad... San Fran was awesome when we were there last year and probably the best festival our team has ever been to...

Bummer..I'm sure if teams drop out, its for a substantial reason seeing as how the festival usually sells out 3-4 months in advance.

Predictions anyone?  I am not going but wish I could, looks like there will be some fierce competition.  Let's see who is going:

LARD - can they repeat?
Magnum - can they overcome last year's loss?
Masters of D'Zone - Do they have enough to catch the others?
Jetstart - Will the jet engines be going full tilt this weekend, only B division last year?
Dragon Warriors - Always tough on their home turf, plus they dislike hearing O Canada
BAD - Will they be good this year or just B.A.D.?
Space Dragons - Will they be in hyper space or just spaced out?
Sudden Impact - Always a bridesmaid or the flower girl, will they finally make it to the alter?

????Also rans????
Killer Guppies - lurking around but they are just guppies and not sharks
Dieselfish - Same as the Guppies but slimmy because of the diesel, is San Fran harbour that polluted with diesel?
Lightwave - had a good run at Alcan, have they improved?
Pond Scum - How will they react to not being in a pond when they paddle, big waves and all.
Wasabi - in my high school days they rivalled FCRCC, now hardly hear of them. Will they come out with a roar or a whimper?

Wish the grid would come out so I could see what I will be missing.

With a name like LARD, you can't come up with something more witty? ;)  As always, we will be paddling our hardest. Placing will depend on how hard everyone else paddles.

I think Killer Guppies will have a very good showing, they looked good at Long Beach.

DH Magnum is clearly the favorite team to win based on how they performed this season so far...

Well I was giving some "respect" to the 2009 champions thus nothing too funny, but if you insist:

LARD - Did they get fat and sassy eating all that fried food and baked goods since last year, made from lard of course
Masters of D'Zone - will they master their domain (race) or just be master debators this weekend?
Magnum - will they be drinking a magnum of champagne or crying a magnum of tears?
Lightwave - will they see the light or get sucked into a black hole where no light will ever be seen again?
Wasabi - will they be hot like wasabi or cold like sushi?

In all honesty, the seeding is pretty fair. LARD didn't do as well in Alcan this year compared to the last couple of years. Same goes for Long Beach. We didn't do anything to earn any respect. Hopefully we can go out and bust some brackets this weekend.

hey everyone! I left my wallet on one of the shuttles from Marriott to Treasure Island today, it's in the 3rd row from the back in the webbing....it's a black leather Oakley with a girl's id and our keycard to the Marriott in it, if anyone finds it could you please return it to the Marriott front desk or any Dragon Hearts Magnum paddler

thank you!

That's a bummer about your wallet.  I think if the bus took only dragon boaters you would have a high hance at getting it returned.  Unfortunately it also takes people in the city for free too.  Have you tried calling the shuttle services orgainizer?  One year I left my camera and got it back the next morning after getting in touch with him.

It was a HUGE Canadian domination.  The curse is alive and kicking and the standard set for next year.  Venue was awesome, weather was fabulous, transportation shuttles, loved them.  Some suggestions to San Fran organizer's for next year:

1)  Need tentage in marshalling area.  Standing in the shade of the dumpster was smelly.
2)  More race announcements in paddler's village.  We almost missed our semi final because you got 45min ahead of schedule when you announced at the team captain's meeting you would stick to 15 min if you got ahead.  and we arrived 10 min before the scheduled marshalling of the race. However, being ahead is always nice.
3)  Starter:  Hire Kim!!!  (enough said)

Otherwise, a very good regatta.

Hi All,

On behalf of the California Dragon Boat Association (CDBA) I just wanted to thank all of the visiting crews that came down to enjoy some excellent racing this past weekend.  Our festival is a race run by paddlers for paddlers and your support means a lot to us.

As already noted, the results, in cleaned up format have been posted at:

Dragon Hearts Magnum

Alliance of Smiles BAD Dragons
Killer Guppies Gold
Cal Dragonboat

We hope to see you all on the water next year.

Just a quick note to everyone from Canada...anyone who wants to race in SF next year, you may want to register your team ASAP. Spread the word, San Francisco is the best race in the US. Great Racing, Great City, Great Venue and above all - CDBA and all the SF teams ROCK!

We sure raced some tough teams down there (LARD, Dragon Warriors, BAD, Absolute, Ripple, Cal Dragonboat, Wasabi, Bridge City (Portland), Space Dragons, Killer Guppies, DPW, SFL and Dragon Max). Portland, LA, Texas and SF represented very well.

BTW, there is a rumour circulating around that a team from CHINA might be coming to try to take away our domination. If they do show, we will have to bring our top guns down.

Once again, thank you to all the Canadians for making me feel like we were at home again. It was great to see Pond Scum (Regina), Deep Cove (Perfect Catch, In Snyc, Catch 22), TD Lighting, Fluid Motion, Jet Start (Toronto), Dragon Hearts Magnum, Masters of D'zone, Sudden Impact Black (Fraser Valley), Fort Langley, Sister in Sync, and lifescan

Hope to you see you all again next year....

See you next year !

Back home and exhausted.  Weather was beautiful ... 25-30 degrees sunshine over the weekend.

This is a very well run race.  It's the 4th time that I've been to SF, and it has always been fun.

My comments:
- The competition is good across all divisions (Mixed and Junior). California teams LARD, Dragon Warriors and BAD put up good competition in the A final.
- The hosting teams are great.  They really take care of visiting teams.
- Dockmaster Kerry kept things going on time.
- Convenient shuttle bus service to and from race site.
- Closing ceremonies - Good gesture to have top 3 in consolation invited to the stage for photos
- Cheers to Dragon Warriors and CDBA for organizing.  This definitely is a race run by paddlers for paddlers.

These are a few of the photos I took over the weekend.  They are mostly from the closing ceremonies.  Hopefully, others will have additional photos to share.

Great Warm weekend of racing!
Lots of close races and once again the Canadian curse rears it's delicate head...
I didn't hear O'Canada as many times as I would like but the only one was touching and brought a tear to my eye.....sniff
Managed a few shots but didn't bring any heavy weapons so enjoy!

Title: San Francisco International DB Festival - Marshalling Area Tent
Post by: thefivechinesebrothers on September 30, 2010, 09:41:41 AM
Sorry about the funky experience. The site plan and tents are finalized weeks in advance and the extremely warm weather we had this past weekend was very rare for TI and because we operate on a shoestring budget we only order what we feel is needed.

However standing next to a dumpster is horrible so I'll definitely forward your comments along to the festival director about having a marshalling area tent.

The other two questions are race related so drop our race director, Hans Wu, a note.

Thank you,
Henry

If you paddle in False Creek, standing next to a dumpster is an improvement....

I found it interesting that they had tents for the people lining for the freebies at the Hong Trade tent, but the marshalling paddlers were left to cook in the sun or ferment by the dumpster  :) Nonetheless, it was a great festival and at least the races were on time or early so we didn't have to wait that long.

On another note, I read that this would be the last year at TI, is this true? Where is the new location?

BTW...I know my last statement (speculative I hope) about this year being the last year at TI may cause some consternation since everyone (including me) seems to love the TI site. This information was gleened from a couple of the reviews from the Yelp site below.

^ lol mike, you'll have to forgive him, he's getting older haha

Congrats to all teams that came out!
Thanks to Hans, DW, CDBA organizers, and volunteers who made this event happen go so smoothly!
Special thanks to LARD for giving us the motivation to be better!

Dragon Warriors did a great job hosting out of town teams as always. Congrats on getting bronze bling in the Comp A final! You guys surprised me and stepped it up big time!  :D

speaking about dumpsters, I remember last year for the men's race, we hid behind the same exact dumpster, the diff being that it was smellier lol

All in all, this year's festival is one of the most memorable festival I've ever attended so far, here's to hoping it stays in TI! (imho, TI plays an important factor in the success of the festival due to its unique location/ambiance)

I too would like to thank our host team and sponsor of the festival, Kaiser Permanente. Roast frickin' pig for lunch. Need I say more? Amazing food, touching welcome signage, comforting big hugs from familiar faces seen but twice a year, fully loaded tent set up with cubbie holes for our storing pleasure. They think of everything to make us feel welcome. If you're reading this Kaiser, THANK YOU from Team LifeScan. It is because of your hospitality that we have enjoyed this festival so much for the past 3 years. We know it's not easy feeding the gluttons on our team. Great job! Hope to see you at the 2011 Rio Tinto Festival so we can repay the favor:)

Looks like everyone had a great time again. My team and I went in 2008 and enjoyed every minute of it. The team had scheduled to go down this year as our last festival of the year. Unfortunately, we could only get the minimum amount of paddlers to commit, then as the deadline approached a few who had to back out because of health issues. Of course, one teammate and I had already bought our airline tickets. Our back-up plan was to paddle with a local team as our coach had a few connections, BAD was gracious enough to welcome us to paddle with them. Thank you to Alvin Wang.

One month before the festival, I received my kidney transplant. Unfortunately, my only disappointment was I couldn't travel for 6 months and couldn't go to SF to attend the festival and see that beautiful city again. Well at least next time I don't have to worry about finding a place to dialyse for 4 hours, worry about what foods I can and cannot eat and how much fluid I should drink. These are just some of the difficulties living with kidney disease. I wouldn't want this on anyone. Luckily, I didn't have to wait the 8-10 or more for a kidney donor. Please register yourself for organ donation and save another's live after yours.

Thanks for sharing your story, sucks that you missed SF but on the super upside, you got the much needed kidney!

Hope your recovery is speedy!

It's all speculation. There's a ton of environmental red tape to go through not to mention the slow economy. We haven't heard anything as of yet but will keep teams posted.

Thanks for posting the vid!

Note to anyone who's in charge of video recording a race/ if its your camera and you need to get somebody to record for you, tell them:
1) Record from the finish line.
2) Prop the camera hand with your other hand or ur friend's back or ur knees if you're sitting down so the camera dont shake too much
3) Dont shake
4) Record from the finish line!

I have better advice.  Procure a helicopter and wide lens camera.  Mount camera on helicopter.  Follow races from overhead.

lol, if we're going to venture on ideas that requires somewhat of a budget..here's something totally feasible for SF festival or any other major festivals.

Part 1: put a guy with a videocam(HD or not) with a wireless unit on a chase boat going beside the boats during races..since this already happens with photographers on the boat, it shouldnt be too hard, at a minimum, just record the the finals(rec, comp, mens, womens, masters, highschool, etc)

Part 2: Harrison does this quite well, put a trailer sized screen near the spectators so they can really see.

Implementing this might be against better financial judgement as it could cost up to 1-3k but it's a HUGE step towards making dragon boating a spectator sport.
The more popular it becomes in terms of being a spectator sport, the more visitors and paddlers that attend the festival which equates to more profit which will inevitably cover the overhead cost of the camera/screen itself.

Harrison also uses a 60ft, boom truck which swings right out over the water ,,

That's true. Funny when you consider that even Harrison was able to get this thing going for several years in a row, but maybe because there's more financial room for them compared to the bigger event in San Fran when they have to manage a lot more things like paddler shuttles, hotels, venue set up, that this is more of an oversight. It'll be interesting to see if they'll do it.

move the camera man from that boom truck to the boat and it'll be a guaranteed hit.  msn(u)
