Title: Fundraising for the hard of hearing and the deaf in BC Post by: LittleSchrodinger on June 24, 2010, 12:52:27 PM Hi everyone!
Do you know that... * In North America 2 million people are deaf; in Canada, over 300,000 * 30 million people in North America have a severe hearing loss; in Canada, over 4 million * Around the world close to 1 billion people have a severe hearing loss * 1 in 800 children are born deaf. * Only 1/3 of all people with hearing loss are of retirement age. The majority are of school age or working age. * Studies show that only one in five people who would benefit from a hearing aid actually uses one and on average, people with hearing loss wait almost 10 years before they do something about it. As you can see, it impacts Canadians considerately, and many people do bear a chance of losing their hearing over ages. (Even more so if you're among the party-hard population.) Over the past twenty six years, this annual bike ride from Brentwood to Harrison Hotspring has raised over $1.6 million to support the UBC Hearing Centre and the Rotary Hearing Clinic of St. Paul's Hospital as well as many other accessibility programs. Last year it raised over $150,000 and the aim is to match it this year. I will be riding the entire 120km personally, and I cordially ask for your support in helping the hard of hearing and the deaf. You can pledge your donation online via this link: http://www.gifttool.com/athon/MyFundraisingPage?ID=1613&AID=900&PID=139884 Alternatively, you are more than welcome to come and see me to make your donations! Receipts given to donations over $20. If you have been around the Creek for a while, you would know me by face. :) If you have any questions or want more detailed information, you can go to this site or talk to me: http://www.rotaryvan.org/Bike-A-Thon.htm Thanks!
