Title: need a new lifejacket-any suggestions
Post by: selltile on May 08, 2010, 05:08:21 PM
a larger woman. Had a boat go over last week and one of the straps on pfd gave out.
Has anyone found a truely comfortable pfd for dragon boating?

I don't think that a life jacket specifically designed for dragon boating exists. The closest
thing I have seen is one of those that is uninflated when you are paddling but has a gas canister attached so that if you end up in the water you can activate the can and inflate
the jacket. However, even though this type of jacket is Coastgaurd and CSA approved
I think there are some festivals that do not allow them to be used.
So what were the circumstances that led to one of her pfd straps giving out? Perhaps
the jacket was not properly sized for her. Did the mishap occur in a dragon boat??
When she was rescued did the rescuers pull her out of the H2O by her PFD straps??

The best ones I have seen for dragon boating are by Salus.  They did a big special for the Breast Cancer Women.  All pink.  Depending on where she lives there are Salus reps.  Just go to their website.  If she is in Vancouver, contact Andrea Dillon who is a Salus rep.  I would suggest taking the lifejacket back to the company and see what they can do for her.

I prefer PFDs with a flat back for dragon boat (ie the Lotus "Lola" for women - http://www.paddling.net/Reviews/showReviews.html?prod=522), if you get someone in front not reaching as far as they could be with a bulky PFD on it just gets awkward.  Even if they are reaching and you have a long reach, it's easy to get hung up on that little PFD ledge with your knuckles with some of the lower profile PFDs.

As for the inflatable PFDs, they may be approved but when I was with Coast Guard Auxiliary we never recommended them as if they malfunction (hole in flotation, gimpy canister) and you happen to be unconscious after whatever landed you in the water, you're pretty much out of luck.
