Title: 2010 Canada Dry Victoria Dragon Boat Festival
Post by: butter on February 02, 2010, 02:45:41 PM
The 2010 Canada Dry Victoria Dragon Boat Festival will take place August 13-15, 2010 in Victoria's beautiful and bustling Inner Harbour.

Online Registration is NOW OPEN! http://www.victoriadragonboat.com/EN/main/race_information/registration.html (http://www.victoriadragonboat.com/EN/main/race_information/registration.html)

The Festival can host a maximum of 90 teams so be sure to register early to secure your spot.  Another reason to sign up and pay early this year is to beat the HST.  Early bird deadline is April 30.  As of May 1 our regular rate will apply, as will the HST (an additional 7%).

The Victoria Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most unique Dragon Boat Festivals in North America as it takes place in an active, working harbour.  Ferries, float planes, sailboats and whale watching boats all come and go throughout the weekend but even they cannot drown out the exciting sounds of the dragon boat races.

We also offer a wide variety of multicultural entertainment and food during the Festival, with two stages, a dedicated children's tent and beer garden there to offer something for the entire family to enjoy.

If you haven't attended the Victoria Festival before, or haven't been with us for a few years, we hope 2010 is the year you join us.  The Navy Dragon Anchors are our 2009 champions and we know they'll be excited to defend their title as we celebrate the Canadian Navy's 100th Anniversary in 2010.

We hope to see you this August.

Cheers,

Chris Raines
Executive Director
Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society

The HST kicks in on July 1st, 2010. Maybe I am reading the info wrong but thought you guys might want to know about it. If so then click here: http://www.gov.bc.ca/hst/

Thanks!

Bern,

We've done our homework.  Without going into a huge amount of long-winded detail, for services provided AFTER July 1, 2010, organizations must start assessing the HST as of May 1 for those services.  As our Festival takes place in August, we must start charging HST as of May 1.  Believe me, I wish it wasn't so, but 45 minutes and 3 different phone calls provided me with that information.  The below excerpt is from Revenue Canada's HST notice #247:

The HST would generally apply to any consideration that becomes due, or is paid without having become due, on
or after May 1, 2010, for a supply of a service, to the extent that the consideration relates to the portion of the
service performed on or after July 1, 2010. However, if 90% or more of the service is performed before July 2010,
no HST would be payable on the consideration for the service.

Of course nothing is official yet as it hasn't officially been implemented, but this is the plan.  Sorry folks.

Yea that HST thing is kind of confusing. Just thought since I wasn't too sure about it myself maybe there could have been a mistake with your posting. Sorry about doubting you. As for the HST not yet being implemented man I sure hope it fails as I surely don't want to pay an extra 7% in taxes for things that I didn't used to pay taxes on!

Wish I could be at the Victoria Festival though and who knows I might still end up being there! Good luck to you guys selling out.
