Title: Yukon River Quest
Post by: gcheung on November 07, 2009, 02:07:43 PM
Has anyone completed this race, where you paddle 740 km from Whitehorse to Dawson City? We are a new adventure racing team and are looking into doing this race. Any insites would really help.
Thanks

Contact Andrea Dillon at [email protected]. She and her friends did it in 2006.

it's a crazy event dude... i would probably attempt it once in my life time.  prepare for close to zero sleep and paddling like a zombie.

I'm not sure if the zero sleep and paddling like a zombie sounds like fun... hahaha...

Where would you even find more info on this? Just to see how you can get to zero sleep and zombie paddling...

 Just so you know:
There are now three races on the Yukon river
full race:  Whitehorse to the Arctic Ocean - about 1000 klm
The Yukon  River Quest -  This is the classic - Whitehorse to Dawson - 700+ klms  and 52 plus hours
Yukon Race - about 320 klm takes takes 30 plus hours with two 8 hour rests- reasonable

The later race is scheduled in August and every year they will pick a different course. Sounds Like fun !

Andrea still hasn't responded to me. I just have questions about multi day canoe trips. Thats a lot of paddling, and I was wondering what the smartest and most efficient way of training for it is to avoid injury when come race time. We are doing off season training, nothing on water yet. I guess I can look into OC 6. Since they do a lot longer distances.
Thanks in advance

Training with OC6 will definitely help.
As for injury prevention, I'd recommend LOTS of stretching, dedicate at least 15-30 minutes for it.

My teammate has done it (with Andrea I believe) and she hallucinated during the race... she swore she saw Elvis.
