Dragon Boat West

UBC REC's Day of the Longboat has always relied heavily on the help of volunteers from within the dragon boat community to to teach it's participants the finer points of paddling.  With the Kelowna Dragon Boat Festival running on Sep 19 & 20, many of the usual teams and volunteers are unable to help out at our training session.  With a little over a week left until our training clinics, we are still looking for 10 more volunteers and would appreciate if anyone (individuals, or teams) who is not racing in the Kelowna Festival could please help us out.

Day of the Longboat Practice Clinics

UBC REC's Day of the Longboat is one of the largest voyageur canoe races in North America.  Prior to racing in this event, all teams must go through a training clinic the previous weekend.  UBC REC is currently looking for volunteers with experience in dragonboating or canoeing to be clinic instructors for our training weekend.  Volunteer for all of it or part of it, all help is appreciated!

Dates: Sat Sep 19 & Sun Sep 20
Time: 7am-6pm
Location: Jericho Sailing Centre (1300 Discovery St, Vancouver, BC)

Role & responsibilities:
 - Each clinic instructor will have a team come through every 30 minutes
 - Teaching teams how to launch their boat
 - Provide basic instruction on how to select a steer person and show them how to perform their role
 - Go out on the water with a team and coach them on how to keep their timing in sync
 - Primary goal is to make sure teams are comfortable with how to manouever their canoe

Food: Pizza will be provided mid-day for clinic instructors
T-shirts: Commemorative Day of the Longboat t-shirts will be provided to all clinic instructors
Complimentary entries: For groups or teams of 6 or more volunteers, complimentary entries to the Day of the Longboat community races on Sunday, Sep 27 will be provided.
