Title: Last Gasp Regatta - September 5th, 2009
Post by: NFW on July 29, 2009, 02:04:31 AM
I know Sept 5th is still quite some time away but I'm just curious to know as to which teams are attending?

The now famous 10 person dragon boats will be used at the Last Gasp Regatta. It is yet unknown for which race distances they will be used but they will be used. They are quite easy to operate as a steersperson. As mentioned by IronGiant in another posting other than feeling a bit tippy during loading and unloading they did feel quite stable out on the water. They did steer quite well and do seem to turn much faster than the 20 person BUKs. If used for a 1,000 meter races with a turn at the 500 meter mark they could make for a decent race time as compared to the 20 person boats.

I am looking forward to using them again.

How many teams have already registered for this event anyway?

Hey Ian.

I spoke with the race organizer and he said he tested the sight this morning/early afternoon and it works. Please try again. If you PM me I can send you the email he sent me as I discussed it with him just this morning about what you told me.

Cheers!

That was a typo. Not that I was able to find spell check but it would not have found it as a typo as it is an actual word!  BTW how do I get spell check anyway?

Title: Last Gasp Regatta Race Grid
Post by: DBWTim on September 02, 2009, 12:23:01 PM
This just came across my desktop. Here's the race grid (http://dragonboatbc.ca/pdf/2009LastGaspGrid.pdf) for this weekend's Last Gasp Regatta.

The race format is as follows:

For the 10 person boats, each team gets 3 races:
1 race Mixed (minimum 4 women) - 200 metres
1 race Women (8-10 women or 8 women and 2 men) - 200 metres
1 race Open (any composition) - 500 metres

For 20 person boats, each team gets 3 races: Usual team composition - minimum 8 women
1 200 metre race
2 500 metre races

20 person Optional 1000 Metre race for those who signed up.

This race grid is a bit bogus.

There was an option to enter as a 10-person team, now they post the grid and there's only one 10-person mixed race.

One race is mininum 8-women (teams that entered as a 10 probably don't have 8 women) and the the other race is open, teams that entered as a 10 don't have 10 men.

All the 20-person teams can field a 10-person mixed team so they should all be mixed.

You have a valid point as I did see the option to enter as a 10 person team as well.

I'm sure the race organizers/management will read this and act on it accordingly.
Its a bit of a short notice to change things for the upcoming weekend, but the next regatta perhaps.

I can see you point, but it appears that all the 10 person races are just there for fun/exhibition. If you're short two women for the 10 person Women race I'm sure there will be plenty of women paddlers from other teams who wouldn't mind helping your team out.  No one is going to protest if you use someone from off of your roster when the race result does not effect the final placement.  Or maybe they won't mind if you paddle all your races as a Mixed team, even if it is a "Womens" race.  In the end, it's all just for fun... there are no "finals" persay for the 10 person races.

The only issue I have is that with the two divisions (10 person & 20 person) there is the potential that boats may end up having to race back-to-back, and this will cause the races to be delayed as some crews will be on the water racing whilst their next race is supposed to be marshalling.

Fore example, the Winner of Race 10 (20 person) has their second 20 person race as Race 16 (12:00 pm) .  If this team is also one of the 4 fastest 10 person boats, they would then be scheduled to race a 10 Person - Open race as Race 17 (12:11 pm).

When I look at the grid, I doubt there will be a conflict with race 16 and 17 but there is a chance, just not likely.

As for the grid, it looks like most of the 10 person boats are 20 person teams so they should have enough paddlers.  When I look at the teams that are only paddling the 10 person boats, 4 of them are womens teams and two are mixed.  It looks like only two teams (Eye of the Dragon and Dogwood Nothin' Dragons) will be potentially short of women for the 10 person women's race.  It looks like the organizers looked at the team composition and tried to accommodate accordingly and still make it fun.

Too bad I will be out of town, would be fun to paddle in this event, lots of variety.

Instead of having to borrow paddlers from other teams it would be easier for the 10-person heats to be mixed.

Three mixed teams took the 10-person option and were expecting mixed races. All the 20-person mixed teams can race 10-person mixed so why not do it that way? 10-person boats are going to be fun regardless, you don't need to change the roster rules to make it fun.

Maybe the mens/womens thing can be done in the future if they let people know ahead of time.

I foresee that most paddlers would get the most bang out of their buck on this regatta, as there will be less rest and waiting in between the many races lol

Crappy weather to start the day but got better after 2ish.
Thanks to all the teams for the close races (Masters, Easy Peezy, etc)

I had a great time but was super exhausted by the end of it all, definitely worth the 20 bucks lol

Big thanks to the volunteers and race management! Great racing all!  :D

Master's of D'Zone Rock!  For older paddlers they are amazing.  I'm sure they will be one of the top 3 teams of the DB Rankings in the next few years!

I know it's just finished, but does any one know if the GASP will be an annual event?

We're starting to do some advance planning/budgeting for next year and it would be great to know if this can be part of our plans.

I guess it depends if there will be a DragonZone on False Creek next year.

Dragon Zone should still be in false creek next year, seeing as the RTA will still be held there for 2010.

As for the outlook of Last Gasp, it looks good because i doubt that the Taiwanese DB Festival will be run next year (as much fun as that was)  :(

i hope this regatta is a one time event! only for the pure fact that i want there to be a taiwanese db festival next year! or maybe it can be on labour day monday. god i hope they bring back taiwanese fest, but most likely gone forever. :(

Last Gasp was very well run for a particularily short-notice regatta. There were more teams than I had expected! The price wasn't bad either :)

I believe Dragonzone is to be moved to the North side of the creek, so latecomers from the skytrain have to run a bit longer ;) I also hear that Gasp will be an annual event. Given that it was organized by very few people (compared to other regattas) imagine the possibilities when a bit more planning is involved!

I didn't take part in this regatta (just got home a day before... so I'd be too jetlagged to walk properly) but it was great to see teams get out and do 1000m for the first time with nearly no training whatsoever. Good job everyone!!!
