Canceled due to lack of sponsorship. And DBA is pretty much non-existant now since their dock can't even be accessed due to olympic site construction. =[ It was one of my favourite festivals too

It sad to see the Taiwanese not being run this year...and possibly not anymore in the future.
I gotta say it's the fun regatta out of all the serious one (not that i mind serious ones, but it does give you a change of scenery in the season)

Will miss:
- The flag pulling!
- Paddling blindfolded!
- Barrel races
- Switching to your offside on your seat in time with the entire boat just to shave those precious seconds in the Nogard races!

Will NOT miss:
- Pricey food stands
- BRICK waterlogged paddles!
- Private boaters cutting boats off in the middle of races!
- Super high seats in comparison to the water line
- The extremely sore back the day after!

The Taiwanese Cultural Festival is still going on.... Sep 5-7th, 2009

But the Vancouver Taiwanese Dragon Boat Race is canceled for this year.... so far.

I have spoken with Festival Director Charlie Wu, and the cancellation was for several issues

Charlie would like to resurrect the Vancouver Taiwanese Dragon Boat Race, and hopefully continue a unique and traditional style of dragon boat racing that brought Flag grabbing to Canada in 2003 for six years straight.  The boats in Vancouver are different from the Kaoshung Taiwanese boats in Portland OR.  The boats in Vancouver are lighter, made of Alaskan cedarwood, so with their width, they really float on top of the water, enabling you to spin the boats when turning.

The Taiwanese boats used in Vancouver, are also used on the Mississippi River and on an American mid-west dragon boat circuit.
Check out the Dubuque Iowa dragon boat race.

This year, the dragon boat race in Cedar Rapids Iowa, was cancelled due to low enrollment of 6 teams.  They need 12 to continue.

Last year's Vancouver Taiwanese Races had 25 teams, lower than previous years of 30 teams.

Is it just me or the Taiwanfest feels similar to the night market? bear in mind, I'm asian lol

Can you tell us what was the issues that you two discussed? apart from the obvious low team enrollment issue of course  :D
