Title: Recommended Clothing for Winter Paddling Post by: yakkamut on November 02, 2008, 10:27:27 AM Hey, just wanted to get your opinions on the best clothes for paddling in the cold weather; clothing that will keep you as warm and dry as possible, will block out the wind, but doesn't impair mobility by being too bulky.
Thanks! Title: Re: Recommended Clothing for Winter Paddling Post by: rightarm on November 04, 2008, 10:05:05 AM no brand recommendations here, but LAYERING! start with a really thin, light synthetic layer to wick away moisture from your skin. then depending on how cold, a lightweight or midweight synthetic insulative layer... be careful what you choose. not all materials are created equal... some will keep you warm but will soak up water like crazy and become really heavy, particularly around the cuffs where you make contact with the water. and then finally a shell, ideally water proof and breathable. some of the best waterproof shells aren't breathable and will make you sweat like crazy... your inner layer will help with that but only so much.
of course ensuring all this stuff fits properly is also key... if you have any of these components already, take them with you to the store when you go to try on whatever else you're buying, and do some air paddling in a typical position you'd be sitting, see how it feels. Clothing similar to running wear will also do. Costco also carries lots of dry fit clothing. Wooly socks are good to have. Actually wooly anything is good.
