Title: Victoria Dragon Boat Festival
Post by: DiggerPig on July 29, 2008, 11:57:06 AM
I know Victoria is still 3 weeks away but who's going to Victoria this year?  I know Gorging won't be as they will be in China but Kia Ikiaka will be :argh:

With the Outrigger Sprints happening around the same time, I'm not sure which teams will be attending.

Just curious?

SI Black and SI Blue will be at Victoria.

St'Keya will be there and attempt their 3rd consecutive win of the Grand Masters Cup as well.
Also, to correct an earlier posting, the GD's are not currently in China but actually in Panang, Malaysia. They begin racing there tomorrow (Thurs.).

Excuse me, perhaps the GD's may indeed be in China by the time the Victoria Festival rolls around on the calender. My apologies if that's the case.

Post by: vicpaddler on August 01, 2008, 03:13:52 AM
Actually not all the GD's will be out of the country. Rumor has it that they are working on a team that will be mostly GD's with a few Kai paddlers filling out the roster.

Kai Ikaika will not be there this year to defend the title.  Good luck to everyone.  We will be back next year to make a run for the title again.  Thie rumor is true about Kai/GD trying to make a team.  You just might see a few from Kai on the GD's team.  :D  If you want to take a crack at us we will be at the Portland race on Sept. 6th and 7th.

Its only a week away..
Since I'm not a good candidate to make such predictions...anyone with more knowledge care to make one for Platinum A and B?  :D

Gorging will be there but not with the superteam some were expecting. About half the team is still in Asia (including about 6 of their top 8 guys) They are struggling to fill the boat and may be going with a less than full team. I'm sure they will still be strong and make the A final but it could be anyones guess to see who wins this one!!

Not sure where you get your info from Vicpaddler...could you be a mole of some sort???

I'm not as in touch with the Island scene as I once was, but after this past weekend, it looks like Navy will be pretty strong.  And my heart is always rooting for PI as they were my first team.  I don't know if I have as much info as vicpaddler, but I do know that there are still a fair number of GDs travelling around right now and won't be there this weekend.  It looks to be a great opportunity for a new team to claim top honours this year as I'm pretty sure it's only been Kai and Gorging winning the Festival for the past 7 years.

Good luck one and all!

I only have 2 predictions for Victoria:

a) there will be some sort of crazy collision or near collision, thanks to the tides/currents/etc

b) the Pirates will comand control of the beer garden!

Good luck all!

After day one, Gd's (and friends :)) have the fastest time with a 1:59:64 (the only sub 2 so far)
the rest of the top ten are in order of their combined times from the first day of racing.

Sudden Impact Black
Navy
Edgewater
PI
Xtreme
Portland Fire Dragons
Dragon Hearts
Dragonauts
Anniemaniacs.

This is by my own math and not the official race results as it has not been posted yet  :x  I hope I haven't messed it up or missed someone.

Well, Victoria was great!  Blazing heat on Saturday, and nifty lightning on Sunday...I am pretty sure most everyone had a good time.

The above race results look about right, though you missed the 50+ results from late Saturday afternoon:

1.  Amazing Greys Mixed
2.  FC Grand Dragons
3.  St'Keya
4.  Sunshine Dragons
5.  The Eh Team

The top three teams were all within about 1 sec. of each other.  I realize that many on this site don't think this is critical info, but, as a paddler for the Greys, I think of this race with (not-so) fond memories.

A great weekend, and Greg was once again awesome in the marshalling area -- he really does make festivals fun!

Thanks to all....see you next year.

Hey Krysee if you go back to page 2 of this topic you will see the listing of all the divisions with the winners. The only ones that were missing and actually left blank initially was for the Gold Division A final which did not mention the 1st and 2nd place finishers. Now it has been updated. Paddlebot posted it yesterday as the "unofficial results" of the Vic festival.

Well ... What can I say ...

Gorging once again proved why they did us so proud in Malaysia.  Even with half a team they were strong all weekend and paddled like true champions.

Edgewater Casino - you deserved the win.  You paddled hard all weekend and came to Sunday with the desire to win.  You paddled hard in Race 3 against us and then put it all together to win when it counted.

Navy ... something tells me that karma came back to bite me ... although I never said anything bad, only that I hadn't seen you paddle this year.  You deserved the bronze.  You were the better team in the finals.  You put it together and you should be very proud of your accomplishment.

Portland fire Dragons - way to battle in the finals and way to make it to the finals.

All teams called an early finish and all the teams deserve a round of applause.  SI Black gave everything it had.  You didn't get handed a medal ... you EARNED those medals.  To that we tip our hat in respect.

SI BLACK
