Title: Good sandals or shoes for steering?
Post by: tjl on June 29, 2008, 10:05:37 PM
Anyone find any good sandals or shoes for steering?

I have some old sandals that had a mostly smooth sole made of black rubber (apparently with carbon black, which makes car and bicycle tires black and makes them grip a lot better than rubber without carbon black).

However, those broke.  I have another pair with a patterned sole that is mostly non-black, and those slip all over the place on wet steering decks.  I got a pair with black rubber on the sole, but it had a pattern so there was not that much surface area; these were ok, but not as good as the ones with the mostly smooth black soles.

The problem is, most sandals and water shoes that I have been able to find have non-black soles and/or patterns meant to gripping on irregular rocky surfaces, as opposed to a smooth (carbon) black sole that grips the best on a wet steering deck.

So what good sandals or shoes for steering have you found?

Have you tried Crocs or Crocs rip-offs?

I just got a pair of Lizards and I like them quite a bit.  Good solid sole with a nice grip wherever you are.  I haven't tried steering in them yet, but with the grip they provide me when paddling, I'm sure they would work quite well.  A little on the pricey side mind you, but they are Italian...and comfy.

I'm surprised you have never heard of Crocs, perhaps you've seen them but never knew their name.

The rip-off version would be, well rip-offs of Crocs made in china or other 3rd world countries.

I personally think they are HIDEOUS, but 80% or so of my teammates all wear them, in one version or another. Our steers once said to me that its quite well in terms of grip on the wet deck.

This one is supposed to be superior in variety of slippery surfaces

Hope that helps, good luck!
