Title: Sinking Boats!!!
Post by: Special K on May 26, 2008, 02:21:53 PM
FYI, for those responsible for the boats on the east side of the Cambie Bridge located right by the 'new island', your boats are in urgent need of bailing. Two of the blue boats (6-16's/teak?) are nearly fully submerged. It would be a shame to loose them.

Ooh, the inside of those boats kinda look like the stuff they collect to use on the set of "Saw" the movie.

Come to think of it, don't you think those dragonboats would look good in the pride parade? They're really beautifully rainbow colored.

There are also three Taiwanese boats being stored on a vacant lot on the corner of Imperial St. and Central Blvd. in Burnaby. They are exposed to the elements and as a result are completely filled with rainwater(at least I hope it's rainwater). I suppose the bright side is these three boats won't sink if they get too waterlogged.

I know dragon boat teams on the creek have gone over and bailed out these boats purely on their own initiative on at least two occasions in the winter/early spring. They have attempted to contact the DBA to let them know about the issue. I guess whoever is in charge doesn't have the means or the will to take care of their boats. However, I just got an email announcing the Taiwanese Festival will take place the last weekend of August. This has been a fun event in the past but I'm wondering whether the boats will be in good enough condition to race.

We are well aware that the boats are full of water. Thanks for everyone who's been trying to contact us to let us know. We go and pump water out occasionally, but due to rainy vancouver weather the boats fill up faster than we can go pump it out. The boats will be ready by the Taiwanese festival for those who are wondering. Due to the materials used to make these boats, it is actually better for the boats to be filled with water. It prevents the wood from cracking under the different weather patterns we have here in the lower mainland. As for the boats in Burnaby, they are full of clean rain water.

Maybe you guys should invest in a few covers or two for the off season ??   Tarps,  maybe a very inexpensive to keep most of the rain water out ??
