We were looking to give the Navy a scare in the first race, Oh well. Now its Kai that is shakin' in their boots :P
HOWEVER :x If they are gonna muck with the race grid this late in the game its pretty important that they recognize that out of town teams have planned around the info they are given, and its not easy for them to change those plans. Knowing that we had an early race, some of our members booked hotels rather than drive from Nanaimo in the early AM. Now it will be too late to cancel those bookings without being out of pocket. I know that they were very relunctant in making the changes because some people would have made the necessary travel adjustments, but at the end of the day, the adjustments were necessary to make the grid equitable.... I don't disagree with your comments about your accomodations... Victoria has done a good job to mitigate any downstream issues on Sunday by making the necessary fixes upfront. Happy racing everyone.....let's see if we can try to side swipe the COHO this year... (not positive on it but it looked like their A team) It was a very close final with the GD's coming on very strong at the end against a Kai team that was loaded with some of the top False Creek paddlers. (I believe they had 8 of them this year!!) Overall it was a good weekend of racing with alot of really close finishes. I believe in one semi the top 4 boats were separated by about 1/2 second. The weather cleared up for the finals and a good crowd was on hand to cheer everyone on. Biggest complaint of the weekend: The line up to get into the beer gardens. Some of the top teams never did get in as the line up was just too long by the time they were done racing. I know its a liquor license issue but it has never been a problem until this year. Title: Re: Victoria Grid Post by: Monk on August 20, 2007, 09:30:48 AM Yeah the beer garden thing did suck, but apparently there is a new (and somewhat officious) sheriff in town. It was a shame that the top teams had to wait to get in (if they got in at all).
One thing I noticed that seemed kind of goofy is that the presentations went from top to bottom...Whats the scoop with that? I did come to a conclusion over the weekend however...When it comes to boats, the geminis look pretty good when compared to the #$%! COHO :) Title: Re: Victoria Grid Post by: shaggin_savy on August 20, 2007, 10:46:43 AM That really sucked about the beer garden! Some of my team didn't get in because of the 350 max capacity. :( Oh well, other then that and the bit of rain in the morning, it was an all round great weekend. Victoria has always been one of my favorite festivals, and will continue to be.
Good job to everyone that went and we'll see you next year! Title: Re: Victoria Grid Post by: mo on August 20, 2007, 12:18:24 PM anyone took any pics of the races/festival?

Yeah... some folks spent a fair amount of time waiting for ferry traffic to clear. And yeah... I was one of the folks who never did get into the beer garden (and given that Victoria's beer garden has been legendary in the past, that really sucks). But the racing was good, the venue is great, the people were nice... What more could we ask for? Congratulations to Kai Ikaika for their three-peat. Congratulations to Gorging for making that final exciting. See you all next year. Title: Re: Victoria Grid Post by: paddleho on August 20, 2007, 06:52:41 PM Thanks for the great pics and video!
Hope everyone had as much fun this weekend as I did. We all love to do a wee bit of belly-aching after a festival and almost the only complaints I've seen yet are about The Travesty That Was The Sunday Beer Garden. A cryin' shame indeed, and I wonder if there's a possibility of licencing for bigger capacity next year. When paddlers can't get in to receive their medals that's just sad. Every year I'm amazed at both Alcan and Victoria how a festival in a working harbour can possibly be a success. A big part of how it works or stays anywhere close to schedule is the tireless understanding and support of the military (Alcan), Coast Guard, Harbour Patrol and especially RCMP. Raise a glass to our friends in uniform! Title: Re: Victoria Grid Post by: Backward Rowing on August 20, 2007, 06:56:41 PM Overall, a fun event. I heard that GO Rowing and Paddling Association was not managing the race component of the festival, who was?
I like the Millenniums, the course (the whole 500m, with the sudden stop at the end), the spectators and a somewhat secure paddlers village. The volunteers were helpful and cheery as usual. For the most part, everything seemed to run smoothly. Whine... about the beer garden. First time I in years that the beer garden was boring. I agree that not allowing the top placing teams to enter because the came off the water later than anyone else was rather disagreeable. I ended up just getting my medal (without ceremony) and heading to a pub. Whine... about steering. The first attempt of heat 27 was bad. I was pretty far away, but was the trailing official's boat calling boat 2 to correct/hold? They seemed to do a really good job of stopping right in front of boat 4. In this case, why wasn't boat 2 penalized? Whine... about the results online. They don't include lane placement, which helps as I am not sure who came in 1st, 2nd, etc, without explicitly stating lane 1, lane 2, etc. Whine... about medical issues. One team had an injured member and still took that person out on the course. If anyone is injured, they should not race because not only are they not doing the team any favours, but their injury could cascade into bigger problems during the race. Whine... about MV Coho. Since the ferry schedules are known, why not allow team to stay on land to wait for the ferries, instead on waiting on the water? Whine... about water officials (okay, really, the Victoria Police). As a race gets started, the finish line is clear. Most boats in the Inner Harbour takes advantage of this to move. Why wasn't the two Victoria Police boats encouraging those civilian boats to keep to the north side, so they did not cause wake that may have interrupted a race? Quite honestly, I can't really think of anything to whine about.
