Title: Stolen Dragon Boat from Ft. Langley Post by: paddleBOT on August 15, 2007, 12:43:40 PM Posting on behalf of mightymouse:
Our dragon boat was stolen last night! That's Abreast with Fortitude out of Fort Langley. Newspapers have been notified and global TV, so hope the word will be out there. Please send any information by PM to mightymouse or Abreast in a Boat president Margaret Hobson at [email protected] Title: Re: Stolen Dragon Boat from Ft. Title: Re: Stolen Dragon Boat from Ft. Langley Post by: Backward Rowing on August 15, 2007, 01:07:34 PM Fort Langley? Crime central? Even DragonZone by Vancouver's infamous downtown eastside doesn't really lock up the dragon boats at night.
If I see "half" a dragon boat on the Fraser, I promise I will call the RCMP. Title: Re: Stolen Dragon Boat from Ft. They better start locking up after this public announcement!!! Title: Re: Stolen Dragon Boat from Ft. Langley Post by: fortlangleydragonboat on August 15, 2007, 01:17:29 PM Let's get the story right. This is the GO DB tied outside the paddlesport center in Fort Langley, not the Fort Langley Canoe Club boats that we keep locked at a separate dock in Fort Lanlgey. We have been locking our boats since we lost the BUK this spring.
On Monday morning the GO DB was missing but found a short way down the river, untied. It was brought back to the dock, tied but not locked up. Fortitude practiced on Monday as usual. Tuesday morning the boat was gone again. It has since been found at the mouth of the Pitt River. We don't know if it was stolen or simply untied and let drift down the river. The Fort Langley Canoe Club has arranged for Fortitude to use one of their DBs for their practice on Wednesday night and hopefully the GO DB will be back by their next scheduled practice on Monday. Hopefully the GO DB is undamaged and I assume it will locked up from now on! Title: Re: Stolen Dragon Boat from Ft. There is a good current going through there, and if a boat is not properly tied to the dock, it floats away. I'll still look out for a half-dragon boat with outboard motor on the Fraser, just in case... Title: Re: Stolen Dragon Boat from Ft. Langley Post by: rightarm on August 15, 2007, 01:44:26 PM Actually, boats at dragonzone ARE generally locked up. The exception is when teams who have their own keys don't lock them up properly, or festival organizers who similarly do not lock up properly. I was working there the day after the womens regatta at dragonzone this year and they are darn lucky that none of the boats were stolen because none of them were locked up.
As for knots, very few people every tie boats properly so its no surprise the boat may have drifted away. Regardless, not locking it up is just silly, those things cost a fortune, and a cable and padlock cost a few bucks... its a no brainer really. If they have something to which the boat can be tied, then they have something to which it can be locked. Title: Re: Stolen Dragon Boat from Ft. Langley Post by: mightymouse on August 15, 2007, 02:22:16 PM Actually members of our crew found it missing and presumed stolen when they went Tuesday morning to lock it up with the new chain and padlock.
Thanks to The Fort Langley Canoe Club for lending their boat for our practice today. Title: Re: Stolen Dragon Boat from Ft. Title: Re: Stolen Dragon Boat from Ft. Langley Post by: Waterbunny on August 15, 2007, 02:58:56 PM Wow. A lot of thefts in the dragonboat community these days. Someone posted earlier about Pitt Meadows losing 36 paddles, 2 steering oars, 3 weed trimmers & 2 pleasure canoes...... Just happened between last Tuesday & Thursday..
Title: Re: Stolen Dragon Boat from Ft. Langley Post by: BernMan on August 15, 2007, 03:37:37 PM Actually I got a call from the Coquitlam RCMP last night just after dinner because they did in fact find the boat on the POCO side of the Pitt River as indicated earlier. I actually was the coach of the officer who callled me and attended to the call. He asked if I knew who the contacts at GO Rowing & Paddling Association were so I just gave him the number I found on the web for them. I also mentioned to the officer that a new club that had started in Pitt Meadows during the spring had their blades stolen among other things last week as also indicated in another thread on here. He was not aware but said he would keep an eye out. I do not believe the two are related but you never know.
However if the boat was docked at the Fort Langley side of things I don't think that it would have ended up on the west side of the Pitt River. It probably would have gone all the way west down the Fraser. To head up north the Pitt River would have been something to behold. But then again I don't know squat about tides and currents in these waters. Title: Re: Stolen Dragon Boat from Ft.
