Dragon Boat West

Anyone know who is going to be racing in Victoria?  Just curious to see a list of teams.

If you go to the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival website, click on Race Information and then "2006 Team Bio's", it actually comes up with "2007 Team Bio's".  So I am assuming they just didn't change the front screen?  Our team is listed there with our most current information so I would say this list is for the 2007 festival.

Kai v Gorging... the rematch?

Hmmm ... hopefully if the stars align right we will see gorgin again.  No matter how it shakes out it will be a dog fight to the bitter end.

Where the heck have you been Kai Ikaika?

  I thought your paddlers joined up with other teams this year?  SAKE?  Mountain something?

This year most of the Kai people went up to Alcan as Portland Paddling.  We combined with Mt. Home Canoe Club because we were short on paddlers.  We will be in Victoria and it shall be business as usual  :D

Do you not think that you can beat any of the top 4 teams that you have predicted?  What up with that?  We like being the underdog so Kai happily takes the second slot, but don't count us out because we have been hard at work and would like to 3 peat this festival.

And I only posted some predictions to see what other people thought.. personally, I don't have a clue. haha

woah getting all worked up over predictions already... looks like it's gonna be some great battles on the water in victoria.  predictions are just for fun...  the proving ground is on the water not the forums.

You are right on ... the forum is just a place for a whole lot of lip smack.  No matter how is shakes out ... you've got to go out there and earn it on the water.

1 race ... 1 chance.  Then you have to wait 365 days to find out again  :D  I guess that's why we keep coming back year after year.

Always wonder why we get thrown into the "no particular order category" all the time ... oh well.

I would add Navy in the top 5, and PI in the next 5.

I heard that Scurvy Dawgs crew had their water rations replaced with 190 proof rum and oral-steroids.  On top of that, they are ordered to drink a litre of that Red Rain two minutes before the race.  And if that wasn't bad enough, the tactic they will employ should the not be in first place is the drummer will use the grappling harpoon and the "engine room" will board the rabbitting boat to evacuate the offending boat's crew via the plank .... within seconds!

Also, I heard that Brew Crew has an insidious plan to challenge all the steerpeople to a airband and boat racing competition at the beer garden in order to intoxicate them before the finals. So if you see any top-ranked teams spinning out, it won't be caused by the currents -- it is because of Brew Crew!

     Is it going to be a full Kai team? There is a rumour goin around that you may be picking up a few False Creek guys to fill some empty seats. Either way it should be a great weekend.

You've forgotten Portland Fire Dragons that have finished higher than Sudden Impact, Eye of the Dragon, Xtreme Reach and PI in Kelowna last year and/or Nanaimo this year.

These are simply some thoughts I had.. didn't mean to leave ne one out as I'm not too familiar with all the other teams :)

again?! *gasp*  :shock:  maybe the CORA National OC races the same weekend would be a good enough magnet for the False Creek guys.

only 2 teams from FC sprint program are doing the CORA Nationals next weekend, although a few others might be on other teams.  that still leaves plenty of people for Kai to pick up if they so choose

 yep ... you never know where a FCRCC paddler may show , we loved to be used and we tend to spread around ......I think they are working on a vacine !!  :shock:

It has been tradition that we have picked up FCCRC paddlers for this race and I forsee a "Kai Creek" or a "False Kai" team happening again this year but I'm not sure of the details at this point.  I'm not on that committee.

Every year since 2002, If Kai and Eye were in the festival, then they raced.  I'm betting this year is a repeat.

I'll bet on Kai Ikaika Vs Gorging.   It will be tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiite! :shock:

two notes:

Eye of the Dragon IS racing Kai.  Good call.

Brew Crew got hosed in the draw, having to race Dragonaughts in round 1.  Their results this year are better than several other teams in the Lane 3 1-seed.

it kinda sucks that brew crew got the crap of the draw.  but in reality it shouldn't matter where u are seeded, just race hard and the results will speak for themselves.  good luck to all the teams!  race hard, have fun... and B-E-E-R (you get the idea).

Predictions on the top finishing women's team?

I didn't know there was a women's division in Victoria.  I thought it was just mixed/women and master mixed/women, no open (aka men's) nor junior divisions.

Chicks with Stix and Island Breaststrokers are the only women's teams I know of.  Stinkytofu, do you know which teams are women's teams, and where do you think they will place.  I really don't expect either team to ranked in the top 10.  Of course, I've been wrong before. :(

I think there are quite a few women's teams registered (ours being one of them) and I know this year there was a checkbox for us on our registration form to indicate whether we were eligible for a "Specialty Award" in a women's division. I think we just race everyone else and then they compare results for those kinds of awards. I know, as a women's team, we really enjoy seeing how well we can do against the mixed teams. We made it all the way up to Bronze-A last year and are challenging ourselves to do even better this year.

SunDragons are a new women's team from Fort Langley who are paddling in Victoria too. 

I wonder what the minimum number of crews are needed to create a new division for the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival?  So far, it looks like 11 women's team are going to Victoria.

I would hate to see them change the format of the Victoria race. It's fun to beat the boys.

I wasn't thinking about the central region where you pay full rate per division, rather like Alcan where most crews (except men's) goes into the regular mixed/women races, but they pay a "small" addition to cover the other races: open, women, masters, juniors, "corporate", "unions", "charity", "breast cancer survivors", etc.

Unfortunately, it would make for long days.

In the past GO hasn't always done a great job of seeding. In my opinion they did a pretty good job here but still missed some.

Looking at the teams Eye of the Dragon should be seeded (unless it's a rule that they have to race Kai). I'm not sure who is seeded in Heat 13, it looks like Team Phoenix but they are probably a Jade or Gold-level team. I’m guessing that 1st and 2nd place teams from Heat 13 will end up in a division too high and will be nowhere near medal contention. Some others will be in a division too low.

The seeding could have been better in a few places.

I agree that some of the seeding is a little off, but it's not GO who's doing it.  I know some people who work for GO, and GO only rents the Victoria Festival the boats, they don't seed the teams or run the race or what have you.  If you check the Vancouver Island Races from last weekend, you'll notice some inconsistencies in the seeding from that festival to the Victoria festival.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be a GO apologist, but I think blame should go where it's actually warranted.  I don't know who seeded the races, and maybe that's the problem.
