Title: Nanaimo Paddlefest
Post by: dogpaddle on June 24, 2007, 10:59:02 AM
There were 26 teams that participated in the Nanaimo Paddlesfest on Saturday. Crazy weather conditions. The organizers did a good job considering they had to cancel most of the final heats of the day due to the water conditions. It was very choppy and the boats were starting to take on water. Unfortunately, we missed our opportunity to race the Save-On Dragonslayers and Brew Crew in our final heat!

It was great to see a few of the Victoria and Port Alberni teams attending!  :D  Can't wait to see everyone else at the Nanaimo Festival. Tide conditions should be ideal so cross your fingers for the weather. When is summer coming anyways?  :?

I agree the organizers did a great job with the races, marshalling, pa system etc..., the waves were pretty wild and the juniors did so well in the conditions, as did everybody.  We had a team shirt blow away (if anyone sees it she would really like it back -"BrewCrew"), and tents were flying around.  The steerspspeople were exceptional, some were steering for their first time and handled themselves like veterans.

The fundraising was phenomenal, congrats to the two teams that raised the $10,000 and $2,000, I can't recall the names.

Hopefully we'll have some more sunshine for the next one, looking forward to that final heat!

The weather was fun wasn't it? No really, it was FUN! The water was either two feet below the gunwhale or spilling over it, or at least it looked that way with the one eye that wasn't full of wind and water. I swear I could hear the 'Hawaii Five-O' theme song during every race. Whoo Hoo!  To my fellow port side paddlers... way to giddy-up. We got hammered!

Those who were there: Be proud of the race times you posted. They don't look great on paper, but you didn't sink, and I don't think that anyone went swimming. That is a good day in Nanaimo Harbour.

To the NCKC kids (and I mean kids): This was the worst possible water to cut your teeth in and you handled it like troopers. Keep at it and you'll kick ^ss!

To the rest of you: If you are planning to attend the Nanaimo Festival in July, I would strongly suggest finding some rough water. (take the Weather at this year's Gorge Sprints times a million)

Finally to the Save-On Dragonslayers and Brew Crew: Blu By U would have rather taken 2nd or 3rd gracefully than to take 1st place from a calculator. Oh well...Sh!t happens.

See you in Nanaimo!

I believe it was the Wave Babies that raised the $10,000 and Save-On Dragonslayers that raised the $2,000.

Kudos to Ian for organizing the Pledge Drive. It all started a couple of years ago when he took pledges to shave his head...

Way to go everyone!
