Title: recovering a MOB
Post by: awest on February 01, 2007, 10:25:25 PM
We winter train in the cold waters of Comox harbour.   Does anyone have any ideas or practical experience on recovering a MOB into a Dragonboat?

one of our guys routinely likes to jump into the pure, clean waters of false creek to cool down during the summer.  i don't know why no one else does though. :?
seriously though, when he comes back into the boat, he just hauls himself up and back inside.  this is a BUK boat.  if you're worried about tipping the whole boat over, have the opposite side leaning a bit (read: a BIT, not a lot cause the boat should be fairly stable; have everyone brace the boat with their paddles as well, just in case) to offset the weight transfer of hauling somone in if they can't get themselves in.  having a coach boat for instances like this (cold weather/water practices) is a smart thing as well, as it allows a quick recovery and return to dry land for the fallen paddler.

Should not be too difficult to climb back in, as a dragon boat's gunwale is not that high.  However, the cold water may make it more difficult, especially for a weak swimmer.  As the previous poster said, have the rest of the people in the boat brace (paddles flat on the water) just to make sure.  And if you need to grab the person, grabbing by the PFD is less likely to cause injury than grabbing by the arms.
