Title: Indoor paddling /training centre to be built ..... Post by: paddleboy on October 23, 2006, 05:51:12 PM Look what I found in the Richmond Review newspaper ;
Rows of cash donated for paddling centre..City still faces funding eddyto build water tank A private donor is giving the city $95,000 to adjust the oval’s design to allow for a future paddling centre. Contractors will now create a foundation that can support two giant water tanks, 1.5 metres deep, covering an area of 1,047 square feet. But those tanks will cost a further $350,000. City council formally approved the alteration to the Olympic facility at a closed door meeting Monday. City spokesperson Ted Townsend said an announcement of who is behind the donation will come “at a later date.” Since the centre is outside the venue’s $178-million budget, council still must find another source of cash if it wants the paddling centre built. The centre would simulate training on the water and be the first of its kind in Western Canada. It would serve the disabled, community and elite athletes in paddling sports ranging from kayaking to dragon boating. If built, it would be within rowing distance of the new University of B.C. boathouse. Townsend said recent work on the oval site has been focused on removing the massive amount of pre-load on the site. In the next month, the foundation for the oval will begin to take shape. Townsend said 54 per cent of the contracts to build the oval have been awarded, including major tenders for concrete and steel. “All of our forecasts show that we’re on budget.” By year’s end, 95 per cent of tenders should be issued, he said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- © Copyright 2006 Richmond Review Ok everyone lets divy up and lets pool our money and get this baby built........no more cold winter paddling ! on topic a bit here, but how long would these pools be? i remember doing huli drills in the Vancouver Aquatic Centre, and being able to get incredible speed in an OC1 while tooling around. got from one end to the other VERY quickly. i would think that these pools would have to be pretty damned long to serve any real good to paddlers Title: Re: Indoor paddling /training centre to be built ..... Post by: paddleboy on October 24, 2006, 07:16:26 AM this is what a paddling pool looks like for training ...its not what your thinking .If you have ever raced in Montreal they have a pool like in these photos and there is water around you which they are able to control the water flow direction and currents in the pool and make them as light or as strong as you want to train in

I would not do it in the surfriggers either in the bigger stuff as they will just fill with water ..I use my hurricane for the fun stuff ........the thing fly's when you get on a wave .I hit over 16 the other day on 1 of the waves
Title: Re: Indoor paddling /training centre to be built ..... Post by: Colossus on October 24, 2006, 06:26:46 PM damn. got a spare? ;) :lol:
Title: Re: Indoor paddling /training centre to be built ..... Post by: paddleboy on October 24, 2006, 09:15:33 PM By far this was the best nite so far.It was awesome ..some big rollers and they would line up and you could pretty much surf from the entrance from the bay into the creek all the way to just past the burrard bridge .
If anyone has access to an oc1 this is the place you want to play in if its really windy like tonite out and use anything outher than a surfrigger . Make sure you wear a leash though as you might very well go for a swim . The Hurricane was flyin ..so cool ! Title: Re: Indoor paddling /training centre to be built ..... Post by: Colossus on October 25, 2006, 11:37:07 AM so i could use an x-lancer and have a blast? :lol:

Post by: Backward Rowing on January 29, 2013, 09:44:39 PM Hey, does anybody know if they actually built this?
I've seen this is other places in Canada, but seems strange to have one when ice does not build up on False Creek and Fraser River estuary. Then again, it be nice, warm and clean. Title: Re: Indoor paddling /training centre to be built ..... Post by: Colossus on March 03, 2013, 09:18:50 PM I seem to remember when doing infrastructure tours during the olympics that there was one built in the oval, but that was 3 years ago and I may be mistaken as to what I was looking at.
Title: Re: Indoor paddling /training centre to be built ..... Post by: SpecialK on March 04, 2013, 06:51:16 PM I just did a 2 minute google of the oval.
Yes they do have one - its listed as a rowing/paddling center. I think puppy had/has sessions there before. The virtual tour shows it better: http://richmondoval.ca/docs/virtual_tour.htm (http://richmondoval.ca/docs/virtual_tour.htm) It's on level 1 on the right side. ~K |
