I am in the process of organizing a middle-aged but competitive team to head to an overseas regatta in 2007.
We are recruiting:
1. An experienced elite paddler or an experienced competitive coach to prepare us for competition as our Coach. We will paddle out of the Fraser Valley (Langley or Chilliwack) area starting in January, so this will appeal most to someone already living in the Fraser Valley/Surrey/Coquitlam area, or someone willing to travel out to us at least 2x per week. The Coach will be expected to join the team on the trip overseas, although some costs can be subsidized as part of their coaching fees. Most importantly, we want someone dedicated and with "fire": we really want to show well.
2. Although there are a fair number of people confirmed for this trip already, we are also recruiting a
limited number of experienced competitive paddlers.
A few details about this venture:
- The trip will either be for 10 days to Sydney, Australia around Easter (early April) for the Australian nationals OR to Europe for 2 regattas (14 days) in either June or September (with tourist stops in Paris & Amsterdam). We will make our final decision sometime after Kelowna, but interested paddlers should count on 2 weeks' holidays.
- Interested paddlers must be competitive-minded. Dryland training will start in mid-October and we will practice 2-3 times per week from January until the regatta(s).
This next section is rather important for paddlers:
- Financial requirements: A $300/month deposit for 6 consecutive months will be required for paddlers starting October 1st, 2006 (i.e. $1800 in total/$300 per month for 6 months). This non-refundable deposit will go toward transportation costs to get us to our destination. Anyone who has paid some or all of the deposit and later learns they can't go for any reason will be responsible for finding a replacement to take their place or forfeit their deposit. This deposit does not cover costs associated with the boat rental starting in the New Year, nor for coaching fees, nor food and much of the accommodation while abroad. Those costs will all be extra. All paddlers must be prepared to cover expenses out-of-pocket, although we plan to make team fundraising efforts to try to defray our costs somewhat. We know this trip won't be for everyone due to the high cost, but we think it could be the trip of a dragonboater's lifetime!
- Billeting with a host team to be provided during the regatta itself (2-3 days at each regatta). The team will travel together during the entire planned portion of the trip. All are welcome to stay longer on your own after the regattas are complete, but until then, we will travel, stay and live as one team.
