Title: Alcan Rankings and Divisions
Post by: coach on June 22, 2006, 07:03:49 PM
At dragon boat festivals, including Alcan, the number of divisions and the number of teams per division can change from year to year.

For example, last year at Alcan there were 27 teams in each of the the Rec A, B, and C divisions. This year it was 18 (this year they added a division and made some of the existing divisions smaller)

I know some people have commented on the calibre of teams in Rec A and Rec B and also some people are disappointed in dropping a division, but if you look at where you placed relative to all the other teams (not which division) then you’ll have a fair idea of your performance from previous years to this year.

For example, TD Lightning, Uproar, Ready Jet Go, and Wasabi Warriors were all in Rec A consolation or tail races last year and this year were in the Rec B final, so it may seem like they’ve dropped but in fact all four are in almost exactly the same overall place in the same order as last year. These 4 teams were 45th to 52nd overall, ahead of 67% to 63% of the teams respectively.

So the point is that you have to look at the overall standings. Another example: last year if you placed ahead of 40% of the teams at Alcan, or about 82nd overall, you were at the top of Rec C. This year if you placed ahead of 40% of the teams it put you at the top of Rec D. If you want to track your year-over-year Alcan performance you have to look at the overall standings.

Overall results from past years are on the ADBF site, look for the documents called “rankings” under Race Results.

One more note: every year teams get faster, so if you place the same as last year then you’ve improved. As you know, if you slow down by just a few seconds at Alcan there’s plenty of teams to pass you. That’s why Alcan is a such a good race to be in because there’s lots of competition to show you exactly how you stack up.

Paddle on.

Actually, Wasabi Warriors were in Rec D consolation last year and Rec B final this year.
Warriors are the novice/rec team. Mojito is the premier mixed team for Wasabi.
