Title: Beating of the drum
Post by: ian on June 19, 2006, 08:04:15 PM
The words "beating of the drum" bring on a whole new meaning , after seeing many lead strokers coming off the Geminis with scraped , bruised ,and bleeding knuckles , i even saw 1 girl in tears with pain !
Maybe we can get them retro-fitted with air bags for next year..

Maybe the ruffle of stiff leather around the drums could be removed or somehow padded; that would help. the drums in the Gems are very close to stroke seats too.

Hmmm.... this gives the term "Riding the dragon" a whole new meaning...

Maybe the drummers or "dragon riders" should wear cowboy chaps.

I like the idea of a dragon boat rodeo...

The barrel races are awesome.

Guts and glory is like a Calgary stampede "Chuck wagon race"

The problem was with the Geminis that don't actually have the hide on the head of the drum and unfortunately the construction of the boats is such that you would have had to move the drum platform back when they did the retro fits... I'm guessing that they never thought to mock up the re-fit drum and head on to see how it all worked and with a paddler in the boat... at least a paddler over 5'2" with some reach. ( OH OH maybe this should be in the Gemini rant as well)

Maybe the alternative is just to put a kick drum up there and the strokes could punch it and eliminate the need for a drummer ;)

It sure was a tight squeeze up front.  I kept punching that darn drum and sliding back in my seat. They should at least trim the leather or have it flush instead...
