Title: Vancouver Island festival results & Photos
Post by: Lethal Weapon on August 08, 2005, 08:11:16 AM
It was a beautiful sunny day in the gorge and over 50 Victoria teams took part in a well run (ahead of schedule and more beer tent time!) event.
There were a few suprises in the semis and finals with The New PI and Got Milk (A semi KOI Dragonauts team) not making the final 4.
Iron dragons have picked it up since the 250 sprints and put in a solid showing making the finals along with The Victoria team (combo GD and OC paddlers team), Extreme reach (A team on fire this year!) and Absolut Andrenaline (the eternal bridesmaids..)
When it was all said and done it was an exciting finish with AA pulling seats on the Victoria team and just getting nipped by .27 seconds. The Iron Dragons took third with Extreme a suprising 4th.
Other teams that raised their games were the Sweet and Sour Dragonballs and Got Milk who despite not making the finals posted some fast times. (the KOI will be back!)
One thing yhou have to love about the Victoria teams is the camaraderie and respect amoungst the teams and that showed with everyone cheering each other on. It really comes apparant in the beer garden with all teams intermingilling with each other and having a good time.
Not as many pictures of racing this time as I was stuck in the boat (LOL) but will post some later today. AND YES..there was a Video and computer in the finish line....

I forwarded your posting and a letter to the Editor of the Times Colonist who saw fit to publish a hard hitting story about falling in love in a dragonboat. I think the reporter and the sports editor should show up for a six-sixteen, power 20 and a finish done alone in a full boat.
Might give them a little understanding of the sport.

Oh, I saw that article, grrrr!  Honestly, of all the silly angles they could have picked.  Somebody oughta invite them out  to a practice and see what they can come up with after an hour and a half of paddling...

Love was in the air at the Vancouver Island Dragon Boat Championships on Saturday.

It was evident in the hand-holding, the hugging and the kissing that went above and beyond how teams typically celebrate victory. These people like each other. They really like each other.

Dragon boat races have spawned an astonishing number of relationships -- a natural byproduct of the camaraderie that develops between co-ed teammates who spend oodles of time together practising, fundraising and having fun.

The romance occurs most often between younger teammates, and not always deliberately.

"We started as a singles team, but now it's a couples' team," said Greg Mulligan, a member of the Capital Iron Dragons, a team that would make a matchmaker dizzy with the number of relationships it has produced in its three years.

The Iron Dragons' 22-member team boasts seven couples, each of whom began dating through dragon boat races.

"It's all we do for the summer, so it's almost inevitable that people are going to get together," said Ruth Young, who is dating Mulligan.

I loved the quote about why there are so many couples on the team:
"When you're on the same team it's hard to undo something that was done the night before." Wow. Romance is dead.  :D

The day was exciting.  The very final race was between the Gorge juniors and the Nanaimo juniors.  It was pretty much neck and neck at the finish, but our Gorge juniors, aka Team Egrog, pulled it out at the finish to gain braggin rights until next year.
I wish someone had a picture of that race to post.

The tent-on-the-boardwalk picture is the finish.

It is?????
Why was it NOT enclosed?
Where's the video camera for photo finishes?
Where's the plumb line to indicate their finish line?

Wow....must have been a very small festival.

Smallish (47 teams), relaxed, FUN - original name 'FUNFEST' - heck, it's so small no one whines about the outcome. Other teams were happy for the winners. what a back-woods operation, huh?

The plumb line which is barely visible in the photo was lined up with an orange mark on the Selkirk Trestle.

Timers' tent not enclosed except for a back wall. You can't really tell in the pic but you'd have to be hovering 15 or 20' over the water to get in the sides.

Congratulations to all the organizers and all the paddlers. Great festival, great beer garden, perfect day. Can't wait for Victoria next weekend.

to Guido.....perhaps you should have been there?   No-one, to my knowledge complained about the finishes.  Because you don't see things on a photo does not mean that things weren't there.

It was a great day....and, yes, it was just a small festival...47 teams

See you next week.

Results are in!

Pretty good racing from everyone
I guess they generated some small numbers with the computer to separate the teams when they were too close!

And yes Woodsman, No one complained about any of the close finishes....
Though I really though we only lost by .17 in the final.......

Guido the reason you can't see the video camera is because they used one of the video cams, on a cellphone, as the finish line cam   , saves a few hundred bucks since everyone has a camera on their phones now a days.

Got make a profit you know so every buck saved goes to the bottom line

How do you know this ADBF?  Were you there?  Because you were in Calgary at the time.  Just wondering.  Nice flaming on Paddleboy, sure you got his blood boiling, but I think people who flame without correct facts should think twice before flaming.

Hey Secret Weapon,

Weren't you in Calgary also with your other half?  You should be supporting them you know, especially when their team had a steering malfunction.   :P

But to answer your question, it was all in fun.  Do you know what a parody is?  Just in case you don't "a parody is equivalent to intentional mockery" and since we all know this event is run by the same people as Richmond I am sure most people had no idea what to expect.  I wasn't in Richmond but it did cause lots of discussion on the forums.

That is why there are so many   in the message.

Next time I will spell it out that it is all in fun since some people don't get it.

Laugh a little, look at things less seriously and life becomes so much easier and enjoyable.

Hope that explains the cellphone remarks clearly for you
