Sunday Obstacle Course 6-16 Pacific Reach had overall fastest time at 4:03.xxx. Team Momentum was winner of $3000 prize. Title: Fantastic Event on the DB Side - So-So on the Festival Side Post by: StraightLine on July 11, 2005, 11:00:27 AM I just wanted to say that the dragon boat races at SeaVancouver were a lot of fun. Having the different distances was a nice change from the 500m standard and the obstacle course of Sunday was entertaining and a great challenge for paddlers and steerspeople alike. Who was the evil genius who thought of switching strokes during the middle of the event?
General consensus from my team was that the obstacle course was created over the consuming of copious amounts of beer! :Cheers: Hats off to the race organizers for a well run event. They were able to work around the problem of the 500m start line/1000m turn around line being cut and a couple squatter boats sitting on the race course, and keep the event running smoothly. Also, hats off to the first few teams racing the 1000m and having to rely on a verbal command from a coach boat to make your turn at the top of the course. Now, if only the rest of the SeaVancouver Festival could learn from the DB portion..... StraightLine. No bones to pick there. In fact the obstacle course was incredibly creative, kudos to whoever thought that up! :D
But Sea vancouver as a whole, speaking as someone who has a background in event production and promotion, had to be one of the most poorly organized public festivals I have ever seen. If they seriously are trying to blame the low attendance and revenues on the weather, then they are truly out to lunch. Who ever thought it would be a good idea to have a main attraction in one location which, they KNEW, would be a human-traffic nightmare and occupy most of the visitor's time, along with a series of satellite locations which required paid entrance with little benefit once inside. Obviousyl this makes for a result of barely anyone attending. I mean hell, look at the site where the regatta was held. They could pay $20 to come inside where the racers were and see a few lame exhibitors and watch a couple of performers, or for free they could stand on the science world deck, watch the races, still hear the performers, get a better view of hte finish, and get food from whitespot. Where is the incentive to pay $20 to come inside? Were the organizers relying on the goodness of their hearts or something? A sense of civic duty to support a poorly organized festival? :roll: So when the festival "sinks" (pun intended) where are they going to make up the revenues from? of course the main attraction around which the half-baked idea was created... the tall ships! I say more power to the tall ships owners, if they have contracts they deserve to be paid.
