Title: San Francisco Races Post by: DBWTim on June 24, 2005, 01:21:44 PM Quote from: andrewyan My name is Andrew Yan. I'm the Visiting Team Coordinator for the California Dragon Boat Association's 10th Annual San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival. I'm posting to this forum to see if your team is interested in joining us for some excellent racing and fun at our race this year. This year will be especially exciting as we celebrate our 10-Year Anniversary at a new, scenic race site, Treasure Island. We're really excited about our new larger race site, as it can accommodate more teams and a larger festival, the weather on this side of the City is almost always sunny, and the site offers sweeping views of the San Francisco city skyline, the Bay Bridge, and the Golden Gate Bridge. The only other significant change is that we've moved the race date earlier to August 27 & 28, 2005. Other than that, you can still expect to have the top-notch competitive racing that the CDBA has become known for. In addition, paddlers will enjoy the excellent, four-star accommodations at our very special rate with the Parc 55 Hotel, free shuttles to and from the hotel to the race site, and of course our famous Paddler's Party. Check out our website at www.SFdragonboat.com for more information regarding race registration and hotel information. As a special note, we have an early bird registration discount of US$500 if you send in your registration by June 30, 2005. The CDBA certainly hopes to see your team out here for our festival - it'll be a great time! If you have any questions, please e-mail me at or call me at 415-505-6776. Andrew Yan Visiting Team Coordinator California Dragon Boat Association www.sfdragonboat.com Andrew, I've heard rumors that some people wanted to move the races to another site because of the water conditions at Treasure Island. Apparently the concern is that the condition may be similar to what was seen in New York last year (New York '04 comments can be found here (http://www.dragonboatwest.net/viewtopic.php?t=1730)). So how many teams are going down to San Fran this year? I know that Roli and Subaru are planning on going down. I heard that it's their goal to be the first Canadian team to come 1st in the San Fran race. I spoke with some paddlers from BAD (Bay Area Dragons) over the past weekend. They say that the race site has been scoped out and the race will be taking place on the 'protected' south side of the island. The festival website has an aerial shot of the site here (http://www.sfdragonboat.com/race_site.shtml). The course should be similar to Victoria -- 'paddle out and race back to shore' type thing. So, conditions shouldn't be like NY. Learned to swim yet? Quote from: chaos So how many teams are going down to San Fran this year? I know that Roli and Subaru are planning on going down. Title: San Francisco Races Post by: Ken on June 24, 2005, 03:56:43 PM the race course is set in a protected cove where it will be protected from any wind driven chop. in addition it is not a "working" harbor where there are tugs and other ships going by as it is in NY and victoria. there might be the occasional wake from a sail boat leaving or coming in to berth but this is moderately unlikely since the harbor master and all the boat owners have been notified of the festivities.
check out the treasure island yacht club website to get an idea of what the venue is like. http://www.tiyc.org/ Title: Vancouver team needs paddlers for San Francisco Race Post by: gunghaggis on July 07, 2005, 08:58:26 PM Gung Haggis Fat Choy dragon boat team needs 4 more paddlers to join us for a fun-filled weekend.
I have raced the '99 and '01 races at Foster City and Lake Merced and look forward to '05 at Treasure Island. In '01, I raced with a boat that had a core of Vancouver paddlers supplemented by Boston, New Jersey and San Francisco paddlers - so we have experience with travelling paddlers from different cities. We will also be entering the "skit night contest" for visiting teams on Saturday Night. I was part of the winning '99 team - so we have some winning experience in this theatrical expression. We also plan to visit wineries in Napa Valley, maybe Sonoma Valley, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, go shopping (window) at Carmel-By-The-Sea... |
