Title: Alcan False Start Penalties
Post by: DBWTim on June 15, 2005, 11:37:52 PM
Thought this would be out there for people to be aware of...

Quote
FALSE STARTS

The Start commands are:

“Paddles Up”
“Attention Please”
“air horn” signal, 1-5 seconds after “Attention Please”
If the Race Referees or Starter notices ANY PADDLE MOVEMENT from any paddlers after “Paddles Up”, a 5 second time penalty will be added to the team’s finishing time

Paddle movement means: taking strokes or having your paddle in the water and sculling the paddle.

Looks like they'll be trying to crack down on this. I wonder if they'll be successful.

dumb question, but what's sculling the paddle?

methinks its swishing your paddle around a bit in the water, getting the water under the boat moving so there is less water friction/resistance at the start.  usually brings the boat up slowly.......
