I'm wondering, what does your team name stand for, what's its meaning, and what is its history? I'm especially curious about FODB (Which is the best dragon boat team name by far!), Drunk'n Dragons, ROLI, Vo2 Max, and Team United (RGL United?). Thanks! JDA - Stands for Just Dragon Along, I wasn't here the first year so I don't know the history behind it :( FODB - Fresh off the Dragon Boat - hehe great name I think :D Title: What do all the Team names stand for? Once upon a time in 1993, Van Tech and David Thompson Highschool formed a Dragonboat Team called Just Dragon Along. After 2 years the name was changed to 'United Dragons Ablaze' (I still don't forgive you for that :evil: B!) Mercifully, the name was changed the following year to Vo2Max and has remained as such to this day. Last year a former Vo2 junkie everyone may be familar with here formed a new highschool (no official affiliation) team, so JDA lives again. (Vo2 Max: Fitness can be measured by the volume of oxygen you can consume while exercising at your maximum capacity. VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen in milliliters, one can use in one minute per kilogram of body weight.) Fresh Off the Dragonboat Back in 2000 a new team of Univ. pals was formed, and while kicking around a few unimaginative names one guy said, how about Fresh Off the Dragonboat? Guess we never gave much thought as to how long that name is haha, so Fodb it is. Hence the chinese straw hats you might see the team wearing. RGL/Team United RGL, I've wondered what that name was for the longest time. I figured it was a sponsor, but it was only just recently I heard it stands for "Ridiculously Good Looking". I didn't believe it so I asked around a few times and got the same answer. Their official name @ Alcan is Team United however. On another note, some favourite teams names kicking around out there: Oh please god not Last! Okai'I'kika'Uas (it ain't Hawaiian!) Asian Focus - you had to be there in Montreal. A heavily Chinese-accented lady kept calling up the Asian "Foh-kers" up to the stage. Except they had already left so she kept saying it over and over! Title: What do all the Team names stand for? Some of you oldies graduated highschool in 1994 so you were no longer able to join JDA. But, JDA existed for another year with the remaining kids while UDA was formed for the graduated folks. It was after this year that UDA and JDA combined to form VO2Max...which is, by the way, spelled with a capital "O". :P Minus the units, the kinesiology term can be explained as "maximum volume of oxygen consumed at maximum exertion". "St'Keya" is Coast Salish for "Wolves of the Sea"....catchy, eh? Title: resurrecting this topic... Post by: willpower on September 06, 2005, 01:30:35 AM RGL United's roots come from the Kelowna festival of 2001 when the coach of Apocalypse and Cyclone (originally started up as UBC Chinese Varsity Club's team) merged the available paddlers for the Kelowna festival. With the muscle from Cyclone and the experience from Apocalypse, AC United (also a play on AC Milan and Manchester United soccer clubs) managed to edge out reigning Alcan Rec A champs Team ACME by 6 seconds for a gold medal in the 3rd highest division finals.
Encouraged and bonded by this experience, most of the original AC United crew stuck together as Team United while Apocalypse carried on as Team MPower. Team United went on to take gold at the second highest division at Kelowna in 2002, as well as International Open silver medals at Long Beach, CA (we never did do very well at Alcan though) With 60% of the team being new paddlers this year, the team took a fun approach and decided to add the moniker "RGL", due to one paddler's incessant obsession with the Zoolander movie. So there you have it ;) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ...and in case you wonder why we paddle with our shirts off... one practice in april 2002 I made the mistake of wearing a tank top during a sunny practice. The resulting tan line looked so horrible, I paddled topless the next 6 weeks trying to get rid of it (strangley, it took 4 whole months), despite repeated teasing from my teammates. Somehow instead, they started to take their shirts off too (presumeably to get rid of tanlines)... i guess it was when we cared more about eliminating tanlines than public embarrassment when this reputation came about... and thus adding even more pressure to live up to that rep. :lol: |
