Title: 2005 ADBF Race Format has been REVISED Post by: DBWTim on May 25, 2005, 05:48:06 PM Quote from: Leah Nagano (registrar) [] Hi teams, The 2005 ADBF RACE FORMAT has been REVISED. Here are the details: Basic format: Saturday • Each team will have two races, one in a Gemini and one in a 6/16 • Heats have 8 boats Sunday • Each team will have 2 races (one semi, one final) • Races will be in either a Gemini OR a 6/16 – boat type will be noted on the race schedule when it is available • Finals have 9 boats More detailed format: Teams are divided into one of three pools (Pool A, B, C), consisting of 6 heats of 8 boats each. You will race all of Saturday in your pool, earning points based on the placing in each race. Teams are seeded prior to Saturday so that the top teams will not race each other until Sunday. Each team will get one 6/16 and one Gemini race during the Saturday qualifiers. Points are awarded based on placing: • 9 points for 1st • 7 points for 2nd • 6 points for 3rd • 5 points for 4th • 4 points for 5th • 3 points for 6th • 2 points for 7th • 1 points for 8th In the event of a tiebreak, times will be used with the lowest combined time being ranked higher (exact calculation to be determined). The division that your team ends up in (for Sunday’s races) will be determined by the following: Top 9 from each pool to Competitive semis (27 teams) 10-18 from each pool to Recreational A semis (27 teams) 19-27 from each pool to Recreational B Semis (27 teams) 28-36 from each pool to Recreational C Semis (27 teams) 37-48 from each pool to Recreational D/E Semis (36 teams) Advancements from semis to finals are based on the following: Competitive (3 Semis) 1-3 advance to Competitive A Championship 4-6 advance to Competitive B Championship 7-9 advance to Competitive C Championship Recreational A (3 semis) 1-3 advance to Recreational A Championship 4-6 advance to Recreational A Consolation 7-9 advance to Recreational A tail race Recreational B (3 semis) 1-3 advance to Recreational B Championship 4-6 advance to Recreational B Consolation 7-9 advance to Recreational B tail race Recreational C (3 semis) 1-3 advance to Recreational C Championship 4-6 advance to Recreational C Consolation 7-9 advance to Recreational C tail race Recreational D/E (4 semis) 1-2 advance to Recreational D final Fastest 3rd advances to Recreational D Final All other 3rd advance to Recreational D Consolation 4th advance to Recreational D consolation Two fastest 5th place advance to Recreational D Consolation All other 5th places advance to Recreational E Championship 6th advance to Recreational E final Three fastest 7th places advance to Recreational E Championship All other 7th places advance to Recreational E Consolation 8-9 advance to Recreational E Consolation Leah Nagano Race Registrar 2005 Alcan Dragon Boat Festival 302 - 788 Beatty St Vancouver, BC V6B 1A2 email: www.adbf.com To go to the Racers pages on the Alcan Dragon Boat Festival website, go to http://www.adbf.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=racing.main and log in with your email address and password in the space provided. Title: 2005 ADBF Race Format has been REVISED Post by: Angus on May 26, 2005, 06:58:45 PM So basically, 2 races per day and every race counts.
I wonder if this will reduce the occurence of teams deliberately throwing races to advance to a "favorable" next race and other such sillyness. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I'm pretty happy with this year's format. Excuse me....every race counts?....just because it's a new race format every race counts now?...wow....I've been racing 14 years...and I thought EVERY race counted no matter what!!!! Quote from: Angus I wonder if this will reduce the occurence of teams deliberately throwing races to advance to a "favorable" next race and other such sillyness. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I'm pretty happy with this year's format. That's the funniest statement I have ever heard.....nothing will prevent any team from deliberately throwing a race. Don't fall off that limb. The biggest problem with this grid....is IF the teams are NOT ranked properly.....this can be a HUGE disaster. If a majority of the strong teams of ALL the divisions are put in the same pool to begin these races...then what?....you're definitely not going to have a great battle for all the finals. These teams that should be put in the finals with the teams of their equivalent strength will then be put in a lower division and will walk all over the lower division?....Is that fair I ask you? I guess I should stop here....Secret Weapon has been silent for awhile....I'm sure he and Paddle"boy" are forming an alliance....and will have plenty to say on what I've said.....!!! And to Azn-squall.....what does organizing the whole "festival" have anything to do with the "RACE" part of it? Title: My thoughts on this Post by: tiger on May 27, 2005, 01:06:23 PM First off, when I read this, I liked it. When you look at last years grid, there was very little forgiveness when it came to the semis. You won you went to Comp A, 2nd Comp B, 3rd Comp C, etc. There was no give last year. If you look at some of the races last year, some teams ended up in the wrong divisions because of this sudden death semi.
This year, at least it is not sudden death. You still have to race well but at least if you make it into Comp (or whatever division), you don't have to win the race to get into the championship. Seems better to me. Second item, everyone races in both boats on Saturday. Last year some teams only raced in Geminis (was that a good thing???) and some never raced in a 6/16 until a final. This year everyone gets to "practice" on Saturday, very important for the out of town teams as they were at a disadvantage last year. Third item, they have gone to small pools (6 heats in a pool). This appears to be an attempt to minimize the effects of tide and weather conditions (i.e. for the tiebreak situations). If we look at Victoria, it is run on tidal water, all teams are in one pool. What this means is that if you race when the tide is going out and another team races 10 races later (approximately 2 hours later) and the tide is coming in comparing times is difficult. It looks like Alcan took that into account. Fourth item, rankings are important but they are important every year and at every festival. If the rankings are not done properly then you get a festival like Victoria last year. That was bad ranking (or should I say no ranking). When I look at Alcan last year and previous years the rankings done seem to be pretty good. 100%, no but nothing is so as long as they are close that is all we can ask for. Fifth item, got rid of the drawing of lanes for the finals. So we are now back to earning the right to race in a lane. I would think the middle lanes will be for the top teams and then filter out from there. We shall see if the tide has any affect or not but now everyone has control of their lane destiny :D . Overall, I think this is a good change. Time will tell but the race organizers seem to be listening to the racers (to get as fair an event as possible). Enough of my brain dump, back to work. That's why we have Guido's predictions! How else will the organizers know which teams are strong and which are not? Although it would be kinda funny to stick all the stong teams in the same pool... just to see them all p***ed off. Title: So if I got the gist of this.... Post by: BernMan on May 27, 2005, 04:42:50 PM So far I too like what I have read from Leah and how teams will be placed, that being with others with the same strength and abilities, in the same division. However who actually decides where a team should be seeded in the first place? And if I understood all that the rest of you put in this string with your comments then we seem to be on the same page. I hope! I would like to think that there are a lot of us out there who are out on the water who know who's who and maybe get asked for feedback or opinions with respect to seeding. I seem to recall a while back Guido when you and I were involved in a committee. It was a committe with both competitive and recreational team coaches giving feedback. I recall that we were giving feedback about what worked and didn't work at the festival, following the festival. I think we as coaches were also talking about teams that appeared to have sandbagged so they could get into a division final where they were more "comfortable" racing in rather where they should actually have been. But I don't know if any team who was in a lower division and ended up winning it soundly got disciplined or not by way of taking away their medals and standings. But I too hope that all teams who are relatively close with respect to ability and power get seeded with each other. It does make for good close racing. That is all I ask!

Title: 2005 ADBF Race Format has been REVISED Post by: paddleboy on May 29, 2005, 01:57:27 PM To be honest ......I'm ok with the new format and the one thing that I didn't like last yr also was drawing for lanes in the final . I would like to see it go back to the way it was prior
