Title: Local artist produces whimsical new image for ADBF Post by: paddleBOT on April 25, 2005, 10:41:12 PM Vancouver, B.C. – In a Festival first, Vancouver art icon Jim Cummins, aka “I,Braineater”, was commissioned to create an original painting for the 2005 Alcan Dragon Boat Festival.
“We asked Jim to capture the spirit of the complex myth and legend surrounding the origins of dragon boating,” said Festival Creative Director Cam Andrews, who handled the commission. “Jim came up with an image we love. It’s rooted in magical realism and immediately conjures up the energy and life of the festival.” The fantastical image finds a balance between the fierce competition and the camaraderie that drive the paddlers. Jim Cummins is known as a painter, sculptor, musician and poet and his work has been exhibited internationally. Several of his pieces are held in the Vancouver Art Gallery’s permanent collection. Currently he has regular local art exhibitions and plays rock and roll shows around the city. This year’s Alcan Dragon Boat Festival is June 17 th to 19th at Concord Pacific Place, Science World, Creekside Park and the waters of False Creek. The Festival has been part of Vancouver’s summer festival scene for 17years. New this year, Festival-goers can take part in the Digital Dragon Boat Race. Using cell phones or PDAs, players will be led on a culturally amplified footpath through Chinatown and area.
