Title: pre-race/practice nutrition
Post by: zephyrantes on May 20, 2003, 09:15:13 AM
Just curious, but what do you guys/gals eat before practice/racing, and how long before the practice/race do you eat?

I normally eat cereal in the morning (Vector/Raisin Bran/Corn Flakes) at 60-90mins before my 1100am practice, and a light dinner (whatever's on the menu) about 60-90mins before my 700pm practice.

This is my first year, so I'm really curious as to what would help.   Thanks!

I eat people who tell me Trinity is a spy for the machines.
J/K! I eat steak and pototatoes and drink lots of fluids the night before, and in the mornings, something easy to digest and fiberous, like muffins and Vector cereal, then all day I just munch on Vector bars and Powerbars, or protein bars with maybe a burger between races and lots of water. I don't have a heavy dinner until after the last race of the day.

Photog: Hey!   How about when I told you guys to stay till the end of the credits.   I am useful!  :D Besides, what better way to throw a wrench into the whole storyline than to have Trinity as a spy?

I don't know much (if any) about nutrition, but wouldn't the energy from the steak and potatOS from the night before just turn into fat overnight?

water.  drink lots of water starting a couple days before the race.

And just have a well-rounded meal with pasta and breads, that sorta thing.

Stay away from heavy greasy stuff and you'll do fine.

Uh oh. Steak is heavy and greasy . . . I'd better start using the George Foreman just to be safe.

Welp, I had steak the night before the regatta, and I felt fine, except I felt tired during warmup and coughed a lot during and after the first race (steak or because I skppied breakfast?), and tired during the last half of the 3rd race (steak or my poor cardio?).

FWIW, I took Nook's advice and drank lots of fluids 2 days before the regatta with normal, balanced meals.   On race day, all I had was 3 bottles of Gatorade, and a Powerbar for the entire morning and afternoon.

Apart from frequent trips to the porta-potty, my body did not show signs of malnutrition.   I think I'm gonna stick to that come Alcan.

thanks for the info, man.   I think a big part of my problem is nutrition, as I find myself wearing out pretty good during practices.   Part of that is warmup, but even after warming in the water, I can feel my energy level deteriorate pretty quickly.

The question is not whether rice is a good replacement, but whether white rice or brown rice would be better.  :D

I thought that rice was a good source of carbs as well?  I'm probably wrong, though..

If you're planning to carbo load, you should be doing it in the next couple days.  Better yet.. you should've been doing it since the last couple days.  Any later, like say after Wed and it's only gonna sit there and be of no use to your body...

So if we shoulda been doing it the last couple of days . . . why are we having the group feed on Thursday?  :(

So the question remains. White, or brown?
