From the sounds of it, it seems pretty unlikely that dragonboating will become an Olympic sport anytime soon due to the number of atheletes involved. There might be hope though...off the top of my head the other sports that require large teams are baseball/softball and soccer. On top of the whole organization structure of the sport right now (Yes, there is a national and international governing body.. but are it's rules really enforced) Most of the festivals are organized by essentially local grass root groups who apply their own interpretation to the rules.
Also, consider the costs of housing dragonboat teams in the Olympic village... It would be a financial nightmare (I know the IOC has deep pockets.. but I'm pretty sure the IOC directors don't like to share..) trying to house, feed and accomodate about 22 people per participating country. I hear they're already trying to get rid of softball/baseball because of this. |
