Title: Humour: Evolution of a Dragon Boat paddler
Post by: DBWTim on August 20, 2004, 09:43:58 AM
OK.. I'm not sure if others will find this funny but I found this hilarious.  Probably because I've seen this happen over the years.

It is like many sports in that it is relatively easy to get to an intermediate level, but to make that next step takes years. That statement reminds me of the evolution of people perspective of their abilities. In most cases it seems to look like this:

Start of first year: I know nothing
Start of second year: I know everything and I feel compelled to impart my supreme knowledge to anyone who will stand still long enough to listen.
Start of third year: I still know everything, but I am getting a strange spidey sense type tingling that there might be more to this paddle thing.
Start of fourth year: I don't know %$^. I never knew $%^, what the heck have I been doing. I apologize to everyone I annoyed and messed up over the past two years.
Start of year five and on: I know enough to know what I don't know and am working towards fixing that. I provide input and suggestions when asked only.

Of course, this was never me though since I was pretty much a spare in my first five years of dragon boat...

I know someone like that.. whom use to paddle with me in juniors... And they still think they know everything about db.. Though they haven't been in a boat since we graduated high school back in 98.

oh man... that's so true. Thing is in my 9th year, I realize that this cycle's happened twice already... I guess I'm in my 5th year for the 2nd time??

Ahh, but see ... knowing nothing just challenges you to constantly learn and improve!

I feel like Year 5 whenever I get a new coach

I'm on year 10 and at some point in the year I still say, "huh???"...

If you think that you know everything about paddling...get into an outrigger, a flatwater kayaking, a marathon, or a high-kneel canoe and re-humble your personal experience and/or knowledge...

You can never know everything about paddling...

(that's what sucks about this sport too...you're always learning, like being in university for the rest of your life)
