Title: No Summer DB Festival in Oakland, CA Post by: paddleBOT on July 03, 2004, 01:45:31 PM Dragon Boat Festival Beached by City
THERE WILL be no dragon boats splashing through the estuary waters racing to the cheers of thousands on the Oakland shoreline this summer. The annual International Dragon Boat Festival has reached its finish line. All because of a lack of interest from city officials. Not on the part of the dragon boaters. After seven wonderful years, the event that has drawn thousands to our city's shores to root for their favorite teams, see old friends and fill the restaurants and shops in Jack London Square for a full weekend has ended. ... In a letter to city and port officials, Gee sent her regrets, noting that "A lack of interest and monetary commitment by the city and port to support the project clearly signals to us that the project and festival has no real meaningful value to the city of Oakland."
