Title: Waxing your paddle...

Just going off topic for a second. I do get a lot of questions about paddles....and what you can do to your own paddle....here is the rule....

4.1.4 Paddles. Competitors in CIDBF Championships shall be permitted to use their own paddles provided that they conform to the IDBF PS202 Racing Paddle specification (carbon fiber paddles will be allowed). Competitors found to be using paddles that do not conform to the published ‘paddle’ regulations will be warned accordingly and if the
warning is ignored they face disqualification.
4.1.5 Paddlers are not permitted to alter the supplied paddles in any way, including -- but not limited to -- applying sticky or waxy substances to the shaft, roughening, or taping the hand gripping surfaces. Friction tape and wax may be used on your own personal paddles only.

I've never quite figured out why you can wax your personal paddle but can't with the supplied ones.

I've actually seen people wax their hands instead of the shaft of the paddle when using festival paddles before. I guess that's against the rules too?

*EDIT* changed subject title to be more PG-rated.

Chaos.....I think you should try and select your topic a bit more carefully next time

I guess it could be that maybe some people are allergic to it.  I personally hate wax on the SHAFT of my PADDLE.

sex wax actually melts and softens a FRIGGIN lot in hot weather
i'm not too sure about the MEC wax but i'm going to bet money on that being more grippy.

All you do is apply it liberally to your shaft where your hand will be placed so you can get a really good grip ........ but in the end you usually end up w/ a white sticky mess     I like a bare shaft better

If your not into having a messy/sticky paddle shaft and on your palm of hand:

Try wearing a bike/paddling glove on your hand thats on the shaft of the paddle to help with the gripping..

OR

Get some hockey tape and wrap it around where your hand grip will be on the paddle shaft.

OR

Find a new paddle, that has a thicker shaft. for a better grip.

Title: base wax
Post by: Ken on October 08, 2004, 10:46:48 AM
don't know why people need wax on their paddles.  i find that after a long practice people's hands get somewhat ripped up.

anyhow, top wax can get really sticky on a hot day.  there are different types of wax for different temperatures.  use warmwater wax for less mess.

the best wax i have seen to use for grip is base wax.  it tends to stick to the paddle more than it sticks to your hands / gloves.  it goes on thinner and doesn't get all over the place.

this can be found in any surf shop.

I hardly wax my paddle.. only a couple of times in practice and before races.

Anyone have better results with using athletic tape?

Try X-country ski wax.  You can use a softer wax on a colder day and a harder wax on a warmer day.  Swix purple on average works well
